I use an integrative approach that melds
Gottman Method
, Emotion Focused Therapy, and CBT.
Are you seeking to improve communication and connection with your partner? I know you're doing the best you can with the relationship tools you have. Some of those tools may not be effective; maybe your parents didn't model a great relationship, or your perceptions and judgments of your partner are flawed, or it's just hard to understand what they want. This leads to feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. What you want is relief from turmoil and strength to overcome challenges to gain a better understanding of yourself and your partner. I am here to provide a safe environment for you to say the hard things and hear your needs.

practitioner, couples will get an evidence-based approach that addresses repetitive communication problems.
It’s pretty easy to feel stuck these days. Your job feels unstable, dating is endlessly frustrating, or something feels off. Maybe you find yourself questioning, “is this really the right thing for me?” People might have good advice for you, but it doesn’t seem to move you forward. There is so much pressure to have work and relationships all figured out. Perhaps you feel like you’re wasting time not living the life you want. And as a couple, you may be wondering what happened to your connection and joy. The littlest things seem to escalate quickly, leaving you both wondering, “is this relationship hopeless?”

Couple's Therapy.
Being human isn't always easy, no matter how much we would like it to be. Sometimes we experience events and relationship challenges that shake us to the core, leave our emotions raw, and challenge everything that we think we believe about the world. One of my passions is helping individuals and couples to find coping strategies, process through the difficulties they are facing, and help them move towards healing and growth. I offer a compassionate space that honors all of the emotions and experiences my clients bring to the room, and allow them to process at their own pace, while encouraging them to face difficult things.

My passion has always been to work with people; and I love what I do! By the time a person/couple comes to me, she/he is usually experiencing discomfort, has run out of ideas, and needs help. My favorite client is the one who recognizes this need and has the desire to make change happen. Assisting individuals, couples, parents, teens, and families with the challenges of life is a privilege and a passion! Some of these challenges come from difficult and painful relationships we have with others but can even come in the relationship we have with ourselves! This can cause a loss of connection and an increase in anxiety, anger and depression. However, learning to manage and improve relationships can bring about significant satisfaction, confidence and joy. We are also often faced with the anxiety and fear of transitions and unexpected life changes. I am here to help you navigate these challenges!

Hello, my name is Steven Cohn. Since the onset of Covid 19 I am currently conducting all of my couples sessions via teleconferencing. I meet with couples who live anywhere in Oregon, including Bend, Eugene, and Ashland. My clients are reporting that our online sessions feel just as meaningful and productive as our in-office sessions. If love, intimacy, and passion has faded from your relationship, then I'm here to help. Poor communications, financial problems, low sexual desire, blending a family, child rearing, an affair, in-laws, and/or health concerns can slowly erode relationship vitality in even the most loving unions.

How does the Gottman method work?
One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.
Is the Gottman method evidence-based?
Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.
How long does the Gottman method take?
The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.
Is the Gottman method effective?
Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
