My name is Grace, and I am a white
queer
woman who works with teens and young adults to support them in learning about themselves and healing from past trauma. I specialize in working with
LGBTQIA
folks and anyone exploring their identity; as well as people of color, disabled folks, and others who face intersecting forms of oppression. My practice is rooted in social justice and anti-racism, and a belief that systemic oppression directly affects our mental health. In our work together, we’ll explore the ways in which systems of power and societal expectations interfere with our right to authenticity and wholeness.

Updated 3/27/23: Accepting new clients. - By deciding to engage in therapy you have already made a commitment to bettering yourself and initiating change. Let’s celebrate that! Taking a meaningful look at our day-to-day lives and pasts can be daunting-let’s create a tender and safe atmosphere to wade through this process together. Too often, our mental health challenges are reduced to diagnosis, labels, and text-book definitions that don’t quite fit—my approach departs from these systems and is more rooted in holistic and relational healing.

As a
queer
counselor, I have a passion for supporting other people within the
LGBTQ
community to address the unique ways that wounding can happen as we move through the world around us.
It is hard to remember when you didn’t feel so overwhelmed that you’re barely holding it together. You're feeling stuck and it seems like one more challenge and you’ll be in chaos-mode, scrambling to find a way back to just keeping your head above water. Sometimes the rush of anxiety or fear is so uncomfortable that it affects your concentration and ability to follow through on plans or work. Shame has haunted you through the different parts of your life and it is hard to believe that you could feel seen or that you belong, especially when you've been hurt in the past. You want relief so that you can get your life back.

I specialize in pediatric health psychology (how stress & medical problems impact youth’s mental health) and in working with
transgender
and gender diverse (TGD) youth and adults.
Please note: I am not currently accepting new OHP clients. The past few years have led to major increases in stress, uncertainty about health and safety, and experiences of social isolation and collective trauma (often leaving an unequal burden on Black and other diverse communities). This can make it difficult to find joy, experience pleasure, and be active participants in our own lives. I help young people (approximately 6-25 years old) who are dealing with these situations and are experiencing anxiety, depression, or having difficulty adjusting to stressful life events, a new illness, or other medical concerns.

I offer a deep awareness of
LGBTQ
+ concerns, an anti-oppressive lens, and a background in community organizing and nonprofits.
I believe that we each already hold the inner wisdom we need to heal ourselves. My role as therapist is to honor that wise voice and work collaboratively with you to create a space for the voice to grow. In my experience, this wisdom is rooted in the body and by working holistically with mind and body we are able to cultivate the connection to our truest, and most at ease, selves. My approach is relational at its core. By building a strong, authentic relationship, we work together to recognize what makes relationships feel hard and what new things we might try to ease them.

I am passionate about working with people within
LGBTQ
+ communities and specific issues faced by these individuals and their relationships.
Healing is often a journey in which it is best to have good company, and I would love to join you on yours, to help you find hope, and create space for change, growth, and self-expansion. My approach to counseling is collaborative, compassionate, and strengths-based. We focus on growing internal and community resources while decreasing the negative impacts of anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, shame, and stigma. I work to be culturally responsive and come from an anti-oppression framework. I seek to invite the cultures, spiritualties, and identities of each of my clients into sessions.

I use an anti-oppressive, person-centered and trauma-informed framework and I strive to be culturally sensitive and
queer

LGBTQ
+ affirming.
There are multiple approaches we can take to therapy together, whether that is dealing with stressors in the present or processing difficult or traumatic events from the past. We can work to develop better insight and self-compassion, set boundaries and develop healthier relationships, learn coping skills, or unpack privilege and learn to be a better ally. I am comfortable and knowledgeable about topics relating to sex and sexuality, sex positivity, poly/non-monogamy, and intersections of identity. I have working knowledge in domestic violence, sexual abuse, sexual offending, and addiction issues.

Have you ever felt like you're either "too much" or "not enough"? This could be a general struggle, or it could be related to a specific trait (i.e. too Asian/not Asian enough or too
Queer
/not
Queer
enough). Perhaps you struggle to belong and don't feel like you quite fit anywhere. Or maybe factors such as perfectionism, self-doubt, overthinking, or comparison to others are creating problems in your life. All of these issues are quite common, but can also be extremely nuanced. I understand and I can help.

LGBTQ+ Therapists
Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?
Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.
Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.
How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?
Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.
Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?
While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
