* Years working on cancer , psychiatric, and emergency units.
Maybe your teen or partner is depressed? Stuck on Internet Porn? Maybe you have somehow been victimized? Feel anxious, or alone? Loss of loved ones? I offer a relationship based, non-judgmental approach informed by tested, evidence-based practices, including CBT and EMDR therapies - neither of which demand medication. EMDR directly targets traumatic or hurtful memories and helps put them "in the past." This has been shown to help with anxiety/fear, panic attacks, nightmares, self-esteem issues and various other symptoms associated with post traumatic stress. CBT further offers you the chance to not be overwhelmed by your experience.

i personally have struggled with body image, loss, cancer , over control and adhd.
life can feel so mucked up and overwhelming all at once. we can get caught up in thoughts and behaviors that we know aren't truly who we are but despite our best efforts, we continue to work from old operating systems - day in and day out. shaking things up and making changes is difficult for most and this is where having a comrade/therapist by your side can help. if you want to live a more empowered/grounded life, behavioral therapy can get you there.

For nine years I worked as an oncology social worker at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute.
I assist individuals in identifying strengths and capacities that may have been overlooked or undervalued. In a safe and supportive space we work together to see how these strengths and capacities may be employed in building new and empowering life narratives. I have both in-person and online options available.

I have particular experience in grief, death, and dying (I've done lots of hospice work); coping with life-threatening illness (I am a cancer survivor), anxiety, depression, and disorders involving delusion and mania.
Why do people go to therapy? Most often, it is because we are in a crisis of some kind. Although we all find crises painful, they are also opportunities for growth. In fact growth does not occur without discomfort, maybe even pain. Without that challenge, we will not grow. But we must also have support. That’s where therapy comes in. Through support and challenge, something new emerges. We don’t just get through. We grow. We come out the other side greater than we were.

Working in the field since 2008 has developed my practice & understanding of mental health within a variety of settings including adult outpatient services, juvenile corrections, acute residential treatment, child & family community mental health, as well as work with cancer survivors.
I am passionate about assisting individuals & families on their journey through challenges to findings fulfillment, engagement & empowerment in their life. While our past experiences & connections have led us to where we are this does not have to be where we stay; we can choose what will define us moving forward, our pain or our strength. I work to assist clients in developing their own unique path toward growth & healing while honoring & creating understanding around the role their past has played in shaping them. My clinical styles utilize psychodynamic, attachment theory, cognitive behavioral, & strength based approaches focused on creating engagement through individualized therapeutic relationships.

My focus for the last 13 years has been in medical social work with an emphasis on serving older adults and their caregivers; The last 7 of which have been dedicated to supporting those affected by cancer . I am deeply committed to understanding how one’s story, through attachment, attunement and life experience informs one’s ability to cope with unforeseen changes and variables. I believe that how one "shows up" in relationship to self and others is usually related to one's limbic response to stress, typically imparted during one's formative years. I work with clients who feel "uprooted" by their life circumstance.

We all have times where we feel overwhelmed, alone, dissatisfied, stuck, or worried. It helps to have somewhere to turn, where we can freely share our feelings and experiences. Often, just processing concerns with a caring, objective listener increases clarity and leads to new insights. I love helping people navigate challenges and find healing. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, life transitions, career dissatisfaction, adjustment to parenting, adjustment to separation/divorce, grief & loss, and chronic illness and disability.

How can I find a therapist in Portland?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
