As an immigrant and
Asian
woman, I believe I can better understand peoples’ struggles when they are from a different cultural background.
Life is full of struggles and surprises, and we often feel trapped and have no hope. It is common to have negative thoughts and beliefs, to experience lack of motivation and burn out when we try to move through our life. Struggling with your thoughts and feelings can really affect your daily life. “It is okay to not feel okay!” Emotions and thoughts are two very complicated things and a lot of the time they tangle together. With patience, empathy, authenticity, and wanting to discover depth with the client, people can see more clearly from their past and have a goal for the future.

As a 2nd gen
Asian
-American born to immigrant parents, my cultural identity has been one of depth and confusion. Holding values from my parent’s home countries, mixed with my American values; it has widened my understanding of mental health from a cultural lens. I'd like to provide a space for those exploring their identities and culture and how it has played a part in your upbringing and development. I understand family values are important, but sometimes can conflict with our own individual goals and experiences. In the space, I hope you can feel comfortable to casually show up as you are with a mix of diving into the experience.

Have you ever felt like you're either "too much" or "not enough"? This could be a general struggle, or it could be related to a specific trait (i.e. too
Asian
/not
Asian
enough or too Queer/not Queer enough). Perhaps you struggle to belong and don't feel like you quite fit anywhere. Or maybe factors such as perfectionism, self-doubt, overthinking, or comparison to others are creating problems in your life. All of these issues are quite common, but can also be extremely nuanced. I understand and I can help.

Through a social justice lens, I accompany people on their journey to a more grounded and liberated life by exploring how our intersecting identities and cultural experiences have led to the ways we are hurt, but also hold the keys to how we heal. For my clients, these layers of oppression may result in anxiety, depression, and racial identity concerns. We'll work together to process your experience, draw out your strengths, and support your goals. I love working with
Asian
American adults, and other POC, to connect the impacts of history, oppression, and culture on mental health and wellbeing.

I am an
Asian
-American therapist seeking to create a healing and culturally affirming environment for Children, Teens, and Young Adults. Life as a POC can be confusing to navigate as we can have traditions, values, and obligations that oppose our American cultural upbringing. This therapeutic space will be a safe container for those looking to explore their identity, purpose, and authenticity.

I provide individual therapy to adults (18+) of all identities and backgrounds. My area of expertise is working with adults that identify with communities of color, multicultural identities, and second or third generation adult children of immigrants. I support people in finding a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them by providing a space to sort through demands and stressors of everyday life, relationships, and cultural identity/BIPOC-specific challenges. I can help with issues around life transitions, stress management, self-esteem, identity, depression, and anxiety.

I also have a focus on identity issues related to race, culture, and sexual orientation with a focus on the experience of
Asian

It can be easy to fall into the habit of not prioritizing ourselves. Therapy can be a great way to provide space for us to get honest with ourselves and to explore our thoughts and emotions more intentionally. My clients are those who are open and motivated to explore insights and to become closer aligned with their authentic self and values. As a proud child of immigrants who values diversity, I hope for my practice to be a safe space for all with the inclusion of every ethnicity, race, religion, disability, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression.

Currently accepting new clients <> I believe psychotherapy is a project between two people where the goal is to make contact with conscious and unconscious sources of emotional pain. Psychotherapy circumscribes a space where what has been denied, unimagined, forgotten, or unspeakable can become imagined, spoken and felt. The process generates a reading of the self that is vastly more dynamic than what our lives often permit, leading to the easing of suffering and the creation of new possibilities.

Therapy can provide a space where you can reflect and unpack the multitudes of you. Often, we feel there is a part of ourselves that isn’t ok and isn’t good enough. Or there is a part of us that has been deeply injured. These parts are sometimes packed away, denied, or rejected, and can be obstacles to our well-being. It is my belief that without accessing our entire selves, we stay limited in the richness of what we can experience, what we can bring into our lives, and how openly we connect with others. The aim of my work is total acceptance, and in doing so, walking with you towards healing and integrating your whole self.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?
A culturally sensitive therapist would be respectful and considerate of different groups, with regard to race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors that are important to an individual. These considerations can help a client feel understood as well as validated. While some people think highlighting race could promote stereotypes and bias, more understanding and knowledge about cultural differences is a positive for a healthy therapeutic alliance.
How can I recognize an effective Asian therapist?
You can discern a lot by asking how familiar the potential therapist is with different cultures, as well as asking how they might address issues related to identity, values, and beliefs. Also inquire about their education, as well as any particular training they may have completed, such as cultural sensitivity or diversity and inclusion programs.
What if the therapist does not have my exact background?
The therapist may not share a client’s exact background, but the therapist may have plenty of hands-on experience as well as the sensitivity needed for therapeutic progress. Their sensitivity to different populations will help the client feel accepted and comfortable in sharing their concerns and difficulties.
How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Asian clients?
A therapist with an Asian background may have experience within their community, as well as broader cultural sensitivity. Ask the potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share your background. If they have not worked with similar clients, they may well know someone who has such experience.
Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Asian therapists?
The directory of Asian therapists includes professionals who have shared their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason; also, when the number of therapists identified as Asian is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
