You are unhappy with the way you are coping. You might be dealing with melt downs, shut downs, and behavior patterns that cause harm. This can look like anger outbursts, task avoidance, substance use or codependency in relationships. Maybe you are a parent or partner that is struggling with feeling overwhelmed and stuck in a pattern of reactivity and collapse. As a neurodivergent affirming therapist, I understand how sensitivities in our nervous systems can amplify our reactions to stress. Shame often follows these reactions. We will explore the “why” of your responses and the “how” of creating lasting change.

If you are reading this you have found the courage to consider trusting someone you have never met with your fears, frustrations and hopes. I honor this trust and the individual needs that each person brings to counseling. My practice is focused on assisting those who have met a challenge in life such as the loss of a loved one, chronic or acute illness, relationship conflict, job stress or traumatic events. Although these may be common experiences that many of us share they can also cause symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger or PTSD if lived in isolation.

Therapy provides a connection and opportunity to grow and change within challenging circumstances. My clients experience(d) abuse, neglect, or oppression; grieve unbearable loss; seek to modulate anger or battle low self-esteem; question religious/spiritual/political values; navigate conflict; express themselves creatively; integrate a transformative event (e.g. plant medicine); and unlearn their gender or racial conditioning. You can correct course from historical patterns. Men, families, highly sensitive people, exvangelicals, and relatives of someone with a personality disorder are among clients I have worked well with.

I am also able to administer various personality tests, IQ tests, anger management assessments, etc.
(Please note that I am currently located in Illinois and can only offer video or phone sessions). With this said, it is my intention to not only offer you support in therapy but to also help you generalize the skills you learn in therapy and apply them in your outside life and relationships. I specialize in anger and anxiety management for adults and adolescents. I also work with highly intelligent adults and teens who have a difficult time adjusting and adapting socially and work with high functioning autistic individuals.

Anxiety, depression, grief, anger management and general worry are addressed with traditional talk therapy in addition to, when the client is interested, structured movements that complement the talk therapy work.
People come to me usually for one of two reasons: (1) things are going well but they want to grow and evolve, (2) things are hard because of a past traumatic experience or a current situation, and healing and change is needed. Symptoms often include anxiety, depression, anger , grief and relationship issues. I work from a depth psychological perspective which means that I address the cause of symptoms as much as the symptoms themselves.

I'm not accepting new clients. I am experienced at working with men and women between the ages of 16 and 70 with anger , depression, anxiety, addictions, trauma, PTSD, online addictions, gender identity, and other behavioral/emotional challenges. I build on an individual’s passions, discovering their skills and strengths, and using those assets to help them overcome obstacles in their lives. It is not weakness to seek help. It's wise. So, when habits turn into addictions, when anger causes rifts, or the days feel overwhelming, give me a call.

Taking the first step to get help and support can be confusing and hard to navigate. This is particularly difficult when we are struggling. I understand this and want to support you in feeling better and getting more out of your life. I believe that the most important way I can support you in counseling is by helping us build a trusting connection. Together we will create a safe space for you to be vulnerable and explore your story.

Our trauma can leave us with feelings of shame, resentment, and guilt. When we don't take the time for our own recovery and healing, we can find ourselves becoming stressed and overwhelmed. We become unrecognizable to ourselves and disconnected from our own needs. Our physical health is impacted. We experience spiraling thoughts and an inability to relax. Our anger and sadness are easily triggered. We sabotage our important relationships. We lack trust and fear intimacy. We find ourselves feeling undeserving of the goodness life has to offer.

Inevitably, at some point in our lives we feel overwhelmed and exhausted as we try to keep it together in this incessantly pressurized world. If you're feeling swallowed up by depression, anxiety, stress, anger , or just emptiness, it’s important to remember that the way you feel right now isn’t how you have to feel tomorrow. The truth is that this negative emotion is indicating that certain aspects of your life are demanding to be addressed, as they would if you sprained your ankle. It is a signal that you are ready to deal with what is happening right now--ready to find comfort and relief, ready for growth and change.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
