I work with adults, and teens (15+) of all cultural backgrounds suffering from PTSD, substance use, and other mental health issues.
"What are you?" was a question I quickly became accustomed to growing up in the Pacific Northwest. With roots in Chamoru, Irish and Armenian heritage, there is no box for me to check. This question has been a lifelong journey in understanding who I am in the context of others, and more importantly how I define myself. I hope to work with others who are embarking on their own cultural journey and are seeking deeper answers to questions about themselves.

I have experience in a variety of mental health settings and addiction /recovery.
The decision to enter into therapy can be scary, but can also be life changing. Deciding to take action after the thought occurs is possibly the most difficult and courageous thing a person can do. By reading this, you are already taking one step toward putting your thoughts into action. At this point, it is important to find a therapist who can meet your specific needs and someone you feel comfortable with.

Life transitions, chronic pain, addiction , caring for an adult or child with health or mental health issues, loving someone struggling with substance use: these issues isolate and stress us.
Each one of us possesses problem-solving strengths. In times of transition and stress, these strengths can seem dormant. Therapy can uncover and further develop personal resiliency. I help people enhance their unique coping strategies, to move toward a life of integrity and strength. I believe therapy is a collaborative effort, with your skills, life experience and hopes an important factor in how our sessions proceed. It takes a lot of courage to start therapy. I am continually awed by the people I see in counseling. It's an honor to be involved in this work.

I work with a variety of concerns, but some specialities include addiction , trauma, autism, depression, anxiety, and compulsive eating.
There’s more for you than spending your one precious life spinning in circles. Sometimes we need help to break out of a cycle that isn’t serving us. Maybe you haven’t been able to reduce or quit drinking, you struggle with compulsive overeating, or depressed feelings are keeping you from being fully engaged in your life. Working with a therapist can pivot your life in a way that drastically shifts the path you’re on. If you don’t like where you’re headed, I would like to help you move in a direction that feels inspiring and fulfilling to you.

I specialize in working with people on: anxiety and critical inner-dialogue; codependency issues; reactivity in personal relationships; depression; individuals and families in recovery from addiction ; parenting issues; children; and people experiencing developmental and life transitions.
I work with clients on a short-term model, identifying strengths and enhancing coping skills. I also do long-term insight-oriented work; identifying patterns of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors which reflect unconscious conflict and create barriers in relationships with oneself and others. Symptoms of anxiety and depression are often what prompt people to enter therapy. Some people want to learn tools and behaviors to alleviate symptomology; while others continue with therapy, after symptom reduction, and explore internal themes from their family-of-origin and how they are impacting their relationships today. I believe change occurs through the therapeutic relationship.

Example of these performance block can be: fear, uncertainty, intrusive thoughts, inability to execute muscle memory movements, feeling of being locked, stuck, or frozen, anxiety, inconsistency, avoidance, frustration and depression. I am also seeing people who have trauma and addiction backgrounds. I'd love to work together to bring awareness to causes of being stuck, and freeing yourself from these anchors.

As a certified public health professional, my approach is unique in that it is informed personally by my engagement with the recovery community, academically by my background in public health, and professionally by my experience working with active duty military to treat trauma, loss, and addiction .
I work with clients seeking meaningful change. To recover authenticity, connection, and purpose back into life's experience. We work together to manage the impact of past events. More importantly, we find ways to transcend them in the present, building on character strengths to find life balance. Since working with my first client, my clinical approach has evolved to focus more on the mind-body connection. This dual approach is known as Somatic (experiential) therapy, and can often be more engaging than traditional talk therapy alone. Your recovery should be a highly individualized experience. Please visit my website for details!

My approach to counseling is centered on building a relationship with youth and families, adults, and couples that is based on dignity and mutual respect. I attempt to create an atmosphere of cooperation and equality in counseling, based on the belief that clients are the experts on their own lives and experiences, and that this expertise can be utilized in the process of making change. I believe compassion and authenticity are essential to forging a strong therapeutic relationship.

I am an experienced addictions counselor, and view substance use as only one aspect of an individual.
As an experienced adolescent therapist, I am passionate about helping teens and young adults figure out who they are, who they want to be, and the barriers keeping them from realizing these goals. I have assisted hundreds of adolescents through academic challenges, anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, substance use, ADHD, traumatic experiences, social anxiety and divorce. We work together to develop healthy ways to manage our emotional life, identify strengths which can support self-confidence and motivation, and learn to trust we are worthy of the love and connection we want in our relationships.

My specialties include addiction and recovery, relationship dynamics (couples, poly, open, kink), LGBTQIAA identity, family of origin, SPMI, sex work, and healing from trauma.
I believe the most important parts of therapy are trust and collaboration. You'll know immediately if the therapist is right for you. If you don't feel it, keep looking. There's a lot of us therapists out here and your time and self-work are important! Additionally, at our most vulnerable times in life, we need someone who will hold a safe space for us to approach our edges - the parts of us we tend to avoid or neglect. Addressing our 'issues' is intensely brave and can also be terrifying! I commend you for embarking on this journey and invite you to call me if my words resonate with your needs.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
