I offer a deep awareness of LGBTQ + concerns, an anti-oppressive lens, and a background in community organizing and nonprofits.
I believe that we each already hold the inner wisdom we need to heal ourselves. My role as therapist is to honor that wise voice and work collaboratively with you to create a space for the voice to grow. In my experience, this wisdom is rooted in the body and by working holistically with mind and body we are able to cultivate the connection to our truest, and most at ease, selves. My approach is relational at its core. By building a strong, authentic relationship, we work together to recognize what makes relationships feel hard and what new things we might try to ease them.

Have you ever felt like you're either "too much" or "not enough"? This could be a general struggle, or it could be related to a specific trait (i.e. too Asian/not Asian enough or too Queer /not Queer enough). Perhaps you struggle to belong and don't feel like you quite fit anywhere. Or maybe factors such as perfectionism, self-doubt, overthinking, or comparison to others are creating problems in your life. All of these issues are quite common, but can also be extremely nuanced. I understand and I can help.

My name is Alex and I'm a queer competent Grief Recovery Specialist. Those thoughts and feelings that keep you up at night? That’s my bread and butter. I’m here for the people with broken hearts that fear they’ll never be whole again; the people who have felt pain so deeply that a life without it seems impossible to imagine; the people who stare at their ceiling at late hours of the night wondering how to make sense of everything.

Our social environments, whether that be the workplace, school, family, or community can have deep impacts on our mental health. Workplace trauma has increased, especially for those in the helping professions. I identify as white, cisgender, and queer , and I work from an understanding of how privilege and power show up in my personal life, as well as in my therapy practice. My approach affirms my clients’ racial identities, sexual orientation, gender identities, and body size. I maintain awareness of how oppression can impact our internal and external experiences.

I am a member of the LGBTQ community.
My belief is that we enter life with an inherent idea of who we are and what we want to accomplish. As we strive for acceptance, we cover ourselves in layers of others' expectations, eventually losing our ‘selves’ in the process. My desire is to help you strip away these layers to discover who you are at your core. We do this together by using feedback, intuitive healing, trauma informed therapy, dream work and active imagination. We do this by sitting with and listening to your stories of pain and unmet needs. We exchange heavier emotional layers with lighter ones until you can then stand in your own original brilliance.

I draw from my own lived experiences as a mother, military veteran, member of the LGBTQ community, and person in recovery to offer compassionate, trauma-informed care, utilizing a strengths-based approach.
Finding the right treatment provider when you're struggling with substance abuse or a co-occurring disorder can be a daunting task, but I would like to take the fear and shame out of the process and let you know that change is possible if you are willing to take the first step. You may be someone seeking help for the first time or someone who has struggled with chronic relapse in the past, but no matter what brought you to this place, I would like to be an ally in your journey toward wellness. Client-centered therapy means that you get to be in control of this process, and I respect an individual's right to maintain autonomy.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
