If you are struggling with fear,
depression
, relationship difficulties, or feeling generally stuck or overwhelmed, therapy can help you find tools you didn't know you had.
Are you feeling unhappy, lost or stuck? You can feel better! "In a dark time, the eye begins to see." The poet, Theodore Roethke, recognized the opportunities available even in our most troubled moments. Therapy offers the chance to get a new perspective on both our internal landscape as well as our relationships. With enhanced vision, therapy can help you discover and embody a new story for yourself. As a therapist with over thirty years of clinical experience, I believe in each person's innate wisdom and ability to change. No matter how lost you might feel, I know that healing is possible.

Everyone needs to talk about their personal concerns, emotions, and life challenges. At times, it is best to talk to someone who is not a friend or family member. I provide a place and process for these personal conversations. I work with individuals experiencing stress/anxiety/trauma;
depression
; childhood and relationship issues; life transitions - divorce, the death of someone important, illness, and transitions of midlife or becoming an elder; ADHD.

Licensed by the Oregon Board of Psychologist Examiners, my clinical practice includes treating adults and couples with the following concerns: relationship problems, traumatic stress,
depression
, anxiety, unwanted patterns of behavior, stage of life difficulties, grief and loss, emotional detachment, and identity concerns.
In most cases, our deepest wounds have relational origins. Despite our attempts to cope with these hurts, oftentimes the very solutions we seek become wounds of their own, patterns that draw us further from the sources of our suffering and leave us feeling hopeless and confused. As a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, my aim is to create a safe and confidential relationship where, in time, the hurt can be found and even transformed. Whether you are seeking a brief or more in-depth treatment, from the beginning we would work collaboratively on a treatment plan sensitive to your unique situation and goals.

Psychotherapy is not just a matter of skills and techniques. Healing occurs when, in a safe environment, you can speak and hear your own voice, tell your own story, and find someone really listening to you. When you feel heard, new insights can emerge. Anxiety,
depression
, worry, or conflicts constrict your experience and personal relationships. A therapeutic relationship can provide an opportunity to be accompanied as you express your feelings, thoughts, and concerns. You become more open, able to make new choices. Your more authentic self can emerge as your inner landscape changes. I am interested in hearing and seeing you, as you are.

I have successfully helped people reduce anxiety and
depression
that has only partially been helped through therapy by adding psychiatric medication that is targeted to treat worry, panic, OCD,
depression
and bipolar symptoms.
Accepting NEW Clients (ages 18-65) as of 5/31/23 for medication management only (not therapy). Appointments are available in 1-2 weeks. Complete the Patient Inquiry Form by going to my website. You will receive a response the same or next day. My practice is primarily composed of adults struggling with anxiety and
depression
. I find that people reach out to treatment when excessive worry and low motivation are taking them away from the things they want to do in life. Getting stuck in our heads with negative thinking can often leave us feeling less confident in our work, behind on tasks at home and impacting our relationships.

I have found having a safe place where you can feel, express and work on painful emotions can increase your resiliency over anxiety,
depression
, and create fuller relationships.
Thank you for considering my services. Life can hurt. Set-backs, emotional pain, social awkwardness, fear of anger, shame or rejection can block that which we desire most-loving nurturing relationships, affirmation from others, and self-valuing. I have been helping individuals and couples better achieve those desires for 40+ years. I bring a long history of a variety of skills to a mutually created process.

My practice consists of adults and older adolescents dealing with a variety of issues including, but not limited to, relationship concerns, divorce, parenting issues, childhood abuse, anxiety,
depression
, grief and loss, and trauma.
Therapy is an opportunity for personal development in a safe, nonjudgmental, respectful, private, and supportive environment. It is natural to feel overwhelmed at times and it is not a sign of weak character to seek help. Through therapy we can learn to manage our emotions more effectively, improve our relationships and communication, bolster our confidence and self-esteem, and minimize our distress. In my work, I strive to create a comfortable environment in which I can assist clients in identifying thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and recurring patterns of behavior that may be impinging on the capacity to experience and create a fuller, more satisfying life.

Hello, I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families I specialize in treating anxiety and
depression
. I have experience working with LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. I also enjoy working with teenage and younger clients. I see many people who are going through life transitions. When one is going through grief and loss, education challenges, relationship difficulties, a new family member, pain or illness, it can be particularly difficult to cope and particularly beneficial to be in therapy to work through these issues with an unbiased ear. I also specialize in working with individuals who have struggles with chronic pain.

Attachment disorders may surface as relationship instability, clinginess, relationship avoidance, jealousy, anxiety,
depression
, aggression, and/or a generally high level of reactivity.
Have you been through a difficult experience? I specialize in emotional and relational disorders arising from trauma, sexual abuse, attachment disruptions, and less-than-optimal early childhood experiences. These types of experiences can create life-long distress and difficulty with relationships. Finding the right therapist is an important first step in healing from trauma. My orientation integrates modern neuroscience with relational psychotherapy. In addition to traditional methods, I utilize expressive approaches such as sandtray, play therapy, psychodrama, movement, and art therapy in my practice. What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
