I specialize in working with people on: anxiety and critical inner-dialogue;
codependency
issues; reactivity in personal relationships; depression; individuals and families in recovery from addiction; parenting issues; children; and people experiencing developmental and life transitions.
I work with clients on a short-term model, identifying strengths and enhancing coping skills. I also do long-term insight-oriented work; identifying patterns of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors which reflect unconscious conflict and create barriers in relationships with oneself and others. Symptoms of anxiety and depression are often what prompt people to enter therapy. Some people want to learn tools and behaviors to alleviate symptomology; while others continue with therapy, after symptom reduction, and explore internal themes from their family-of-origin and how they are impacting their relationships today. I believe change occurs through the therapeutic relationship.

Do you have an adept ability to flex and bend to the needs of your environment? Do you struggle to identify and prioritize your own needs? Are your goals and dreams collecting dust while you compulsively tend to those around you?
Codependency
often develops in the personality structures of people who are raised in chaotic and neglectful environments as children. A finely tuned childhood survival strategy, it leaves many feeling a complex array of emotions in their adulthood: emptiness, resentment, loneliness, and confusion. I help people to break unsatisying relational-patterns and to harness more creative control over their lives.

I am experienced in working with same sex relationships, addictions, and can help with emotional regulation/anger management. I am also EMDR trained and certified, which is an evidence based therapy for trauma.

It goes without saying these past few years have been an uphill battle. With the stress of a pandemic, the economic hardships facing many, and political divides deepening: it's no wonder anxiety is high. Or depression feels magnified. Or you find yourself falling back into bad habits. But you don't have to struggle through this time alone. Empathic Counseling can help you cope during this difficult time and empower you to thrive. I work closely with clients across Oregon to help them find freedom from Anxiety, Depression, Addiction, Trauma, or that harsh voice inside you that tells you you're not enough.

As a therapist specializing in helping couples achieve their relationship goals, I believe that most of us are longing for deeper connection. Connection can be thwarted by past trauma, negative cycles, bad habits or addictions, grief, differences, or just plain busyness. Oh, and you may have noticed that things like a global pandemic can also put a lot of strain on a relationship. Our primary relationships are our most significant asset in life. It is your strength that has you acknowledging you need a helping hand to address where the joy and energy has gotten lost in your connection.

Many people grow up in dysfunction and therefore they relate in inappropriate ways. Clients that I have helped the most typically relate to these dysfunctional ways: They guess at what normal is. They judge themselves without mercy. They have difficulty relaxing and enjoying life. They have difficulty with intimate relationships. They over-react to changes over which they have no control. They constantly seek approval and affirmation. They feel that they are different from other people. They avoid conflict or aggravate it; rarely do they deal with it. They fear failure, but sabotage their success.

I believe therapy has the power to transform people's lives and improve their relationships. My approach is collaborative and relational. In therapy, I work with clients to develop concrete goals and tools to increase confidence in themselves and in their relationships. I also assist clients in processing how past experiences may contribute to insecurities, unhelpful patterns in relationships, and professional dissatisfaction. Throughout the therapy process I help empower clients to change their life narratives by expressing and pursuing what they want in their lives.

Most folks can handle the ups and downs of life unless their closest relationships are in trouble. That's what brings people to me. With over two decades as facilitator of personal and relational growth in individuals, couples and families, I am psycho-dynamic (seek to 'peel back the layers') with individuals, helping them to become free from the emotional baggage of childhood. I offer a systems-oriention with couples and families along with some Gottman tools and Prepare and Enrich. I developed a therapeutic program for a children's home in CA and served as their therapist and staff trainer for 5 years.

Accepting Aetna, United Healthcare, Oxford and Oscar Health clients (at this time) The effects of trauma can undermine our natural ability to experience joy, peace and happiness in our lives, and it's not your fault. Traumatic experiences destroy trust and separate us from ourselves, leaving us in pain and fear. Using a wellness-focused, strengths-based, skill building, problem solving-approach, I support your journey in life's difficult times and situations of grief, loss, anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, aging, life transitions, chronic pain, chronic illness, cultural/ethnic diversity injustice, and meaning of life questions.

I enjoy working with individuals looking for short or longer term therapy. I strive to work collaboratively with you to understand the issue that you bring to therapy, to explore any meanings attached to the issue and to work together to find some resolution. I find it is helpful to start with developing compassion towards yourself and your present life situation as I believe empathy for yourself will grow as well as towards others.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.
What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.
How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.
What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
