As a parent, it is difficult to see worry and self-doubt stand in the way of your teenager ’s well-being and potential. You want your child to be happy and thrive, yet they appear anxious and unmotivated. You might lecture or give them advice, but that seems to create a larger wedge between you. Or even sets them off. You’re caught in a power struggle with the person you love the most. And all you want is to see them smile. I can help you.

I love working with kids and teens. Whether its a play therapy session with a seven year old who is learning to build skills around emotional regulation or a teenager exploring their identity as an individual, it is wonderful. I also enjoy supporting kids and teens process life challenges that are impacting their quality of existence so that they can move through them and begin to heal. There is nothing like supporting an individual to see themselves through the light of their strengths and how they can take those strengths out into the world.

since group therapy out-performs individual therapy in research, i prioritize my schedule for teen therapy groups (some individual therapy on a case by case basis).
teens are the heart of my work at deep space. the teen experience can be overwhelming, confusing, and exciting all at the same time. both their internal and external climate is chock-full of newness, opportunities for growth, as well as potential pitfalls they can unintentionally fall into. they want guidance from a trusted adult outside of their circles who sees them accurately, speaks their language, and takes them on a journey of self-discovery to arm them for the real world. my rough-around-the-edges, direct approach seems to be well received by the teens i have/had the privilege of working with.

I have worked in Oregon for the past 12 years as a counselor in youth residential, adult and adolescent substance abuse treatment programs, and in hospital emergency rooms.
Sometimes we can be unkind to ourselves, feel disconnected in our relationships or overwhelmed by life's problems. I believe counseling is a learning process. I will work with you to develop a compassionate understanding of who you are and new insight about areas in your life where you want support to change. I am passionate about working with individuals and families to support mental health and healing from addiction. I believe our well-being is informed by a healthy connection to family and community. In the therapy process I incorporate perspectives including relationship attachment, developing insight through mindfulness and understanding the effects of trauma.

I began meditating as a teenager , and I am currently an active member and senior student of a local Zen community.
Clear, calm and non-judgmental awareness of thoughts, emotions and physical presence are the foundations of a mindful approach to healing. As a clinician, I place great emphasis on creating a trusting environment where the mindful exploration of one's life, both today and in the past, can take place with ease and comfort and so we can work together to uncover the places where life seems stuck and unfulfilling or downright painful. Through the skillful means of multiple therapeutic tools, we will untangle your old habit patterns - whether they be old stories, emotional baggage, repetitive relational interactions or spiritual crisis.

Because of my experience with a broad range of therapeutic approaches, including adolescent , adult, family and couples counseling, and brief and longer term therapy, I can provide expert care for the work you want to do.
Are you curious about how counseling can help you? I enjoy working with people who would like to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and of the relationships in their lives. We work collaboratively to identify your priorities and therapy goals -- and to explore internal conflicts that may be getting in your way. When you feel heard and understood, you can start to discover the many unrealized facets of yourself, learn self acceptance and find clarity and purpose. Together we find meaning and direction.

My goal is to support you and your teen identify and minimize self-limiting patterns that no longer work, while accessing and encouraging innate strengths and resilience.

I have assisted hundreds of adolescents through academic challenges, anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, substance use, ADHD, traumatic experiences, social anxiety and divorce. We work together to develop healthy ways to manage our emotional life, identify strengths which can support self-confidence and motivation, and learn to trust we are worthy of the love and connection we want in our relationships.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
