It may not be easy to begin seeing a therapist, particularly if you are dealing with a difficult transition, relationship problem, grief, anxiety or depression. I strive to offer a safe, accepting, and respectful environment for addressing your issues. I will support you in discovering your own strengths, wisdom and inner resources and can offer tools for coping, growth and change, learned through over 20 years of clinical practice, and my own life experience. I believe in a collaborative process in which we can identify your goals, work through challenges, and create a plan for change.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and a licensed school psychologist. I hold a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. Urban and rural, inpatient and outpatient work settings have taught me about the many challenges an individual may face including experiences of oppression and injustice, as well as a deep appreciation for the richness of the human experience. My style is described as warm, analytical and collaborative, balancing deep emotional work with elements of humor and lightness when appropriate. I aim to help clients address the root of complex challenges, in a safe and supported way.

I believe we each have within us all that we need in order to create the life we desire and that therapy is a collaborative effort between client and therapist to work towards creating this life. I see my role as a therapist to be one in which I inspire clients to open up to the possibilities within themselves and to support, challenge and hold them through that process. I also strongly believe that healing comes from addressing all parts of the self (emotional, physical and spiritual) and bringing these into alignment.

Feeling depressed, overwhelmed, on edge from anxiety or stressed? Perhaps you feel stuck, despite your efforts? You’re not alone. I’m here to help. Let’s be honest, sometimes we all need a little help & support, even if we’ve tried working on it for a while on our own. Life can be complex & hard at times. Sometimes we find ourselves facing issues of pain stemming from racism, poverty, and/or different types of trauma (including religious trauma). As a biracial & multicultural therapist (Latina/White/ Brazilian born), I would be honored to collaborate on how we can work together to get the relief or changes you desire.

My name is Lisa Bettis and I've been a licensed clinical social worker for over 20 years. My approach is to listen with compassion and understanding and with the knowledge that when someone takes the step to come to therapy, they do so from a position of strength. Understandably, it can also be very uncomfortable to divulge so much about yourself to a stranger, and with that, I honor and acknowledge that you have taken that step.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
