Because of my experience with a broad range of therapeutic approaches, including adolescent, adult,
family
and couples counseling, and brief and longer term therapy, I can provide expert care for the work you want to do.
Are you curious about how counseling can help you? I enjoy working with people who would like to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and of the relationships in their lives. We work collaboratively to identify your priorities and therapy goals -- and to explore internal conflicts that may be getting in your way. When you feel heard and understood, you can start to discover the many unrealized facets of yourself, learn self acceptance and find clarity and purpose. Together we find meaning and direction.

Therapy can be a powerful and meaningful experience. I work with adults on issues of anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, identity questions,
family
-of-origin matters and life transitions. I especially enjoy working with young adults and with folx from marginalized communities. I believe that change is achieved through the combination of developing insight into your emotions, thoughts and choices, and the practice of new skills and ways of relating to oneself and others. Our work can help you to feel better, heal emotional pain, increase self-understanding, improve relationships and cope more effectively.

As a clinical psychologist trained as an integrationist, I enjoy working with people from a holistic perspective. I believe it is important to consider not only what is going on in the present, but also what has happened developmentally, biologically, interpersonally, and cognitively. In addition to conceptualizing our experiences as people from a systems perspective, I conduct individual, group, and
family therapy
using a DBT-informed frame of practice. What this means is that change comes about by learning new behaviors in a variety of contexts while balancing the reality of a person's situation and skill level with acceptance.

Difficult life experiences can leave us feeling stuck, anxious, and often angry with ourselves and others. How often do you find yourself asking, why am I reacting this way, or why can’t I stay more in control of my emotions? You want to understand why life is being so challenging for you, and also improve your relationships. In addition you would like to increase your tolerance for stressful situations. You’ve lost friends or have strained relationships. Therefore it’s difficult for you to trust others and you have hurt loved ones by pushing them away or by being too dependent on them.

There are so many reasons why people seek therapy. It could be a life transition, anxiety, depression, divorce, blended families or tough teenagers. Sometimes in life people lose a sense of who they truly are and seek to find what more accurately reflects them. Overall, most people are looking for a space to process and make meaning of life experiences, behaviors and reactivity. Whatever your reason for seeking therapy, good for you for having the courage to take the first step. My goal is to make the process of finding a therapist authentic and comfortable because I value the meaningful relationship between therapist and client.

Many people struggle with asking for help. The fact that you are here shows your strength and resilience. Therapy gold star for you and we haven't even started yet! I imagine you are here because something is not working; perhaps it's past or current trauma, substance use,
family
relationships, mental health, sexuality, work stress, life transitions, all of these-or something else. What is important is you are looking for someone to meet you where you are, extend out their hand and say; "I'm here, and I will walk along this path with you in the way you need. You are safe." I would be honored to be that person in your process.

We often experience the most conflict with those to whom we are closest. This can cause strain and disconnect in our most valued relationships. While this can cause strain at any time, it can be especially prominent during pregnancy and the first few years after children are born. Parenting can be incredibly rewarding…. and one of the most challenging times in our lives. It can also be an opportunity for change and growth. Individual, couples, and
family therapy
can help you reconnect with others, deepen and strengthen your ability to support and nurture your relationships, and your children.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
