I use several evidence-based approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Prolonged Exposure,
Dialectical
Behavior Therapy, and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy.
***Not currently accepting new clients*** My work focuses on helping survivors of betrayal trauma to heal and to thrive. Most of my clients have experienced a betrayal of trust either by loved ones such as a parent, partner, or friend, or an institution such as their university or employer. I specialize in helping survivors to overcome feelings of shame and self-criticism that are actually adaptive responses to betrayal trauma, but that are no longer serving them. In learning to let go of shame and self-criticism, a new way of living becomes possible that is richer, more joyful, and more connected than was previously possible.

I provide a nonjudgemental space for clients to address anything you choose to bring to therapy. I work primarily with Narrative Therapy, which is a world view as much as it is a therapeutic approach. The Narrative approach puts your story at the center of the conversation. People in my practice are also seen through a multi-storied lens rather than a narrow singular story. I will have a friendly and laid back approach in our sessions. At the same time, I will also offer you direct feedback and honest observations. Mindfulness work,
Dialectical
Behavioral Therapy, and Relational work are also important to me.

I utilize evidenced based and trauma-informed care practices, including EMDR,
DBT
, ACT, and attachment-based theory.
I want you to leave each therapy session feeling more hopeful than when you started. I love working with clients motivated to make changes, and also clients who feel uncertain about their ability to feel better—it’s a big step to start therapy! As a therapist with extensive experience working with clients coping with anxiety, trauma, OCD and dissociation, I consistently see how traumatic events unconsciously block and inhibit an individual from feeling hopeful and making change in their lives. My goal is to provide a safe, trusting space to address what's burdening you and empower your sense of agency.

Much of what stands in the way of growth is our own self-judgment. We are all imperfect and our greatest hope for growth, contentment and fulfilling connection to others, comes through recognizing this truth and accepting the natural ebb and flow of emotion and circumstance. My job as your counselor is to help you figure out your goals, learn how your old habits and coping strategies no longer serve you, and help you access your inner wisdom.

My areas of specialty are working with adults who are seeking clarity and understanding in their lives, either in new situations that have emerged or in patterns that seem to come up in spite of best efforts. My clients are usually curious and motivated people who are used to solving problems and running into a wall when it comes to their emotions. I work with compassion, humor, and support my client's in their own unique vision for their lives and how they define meaning and satisfaction.

Helping you to live a life that you value is my goal. Often in life we end up offtrack. We pay too much attention to things that don't truly matter to us... our fears, our pain, our sorrow. By themselves there is nothing wrong with them, but when they become prevailing forces in our lives, it leads to suffering. Too often we believe that we are the problem, when in truth, the problem is the problem. I believe that we can help you find your way. You can live a life where you have created your own meaning.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists
Who is DBT for?
DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.
Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.
What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
