I draw from psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches in my practice. We work together to try and gain a deep understanding of the way your mind works. This can help you discover obstacles and possibly hidden patterns that are preventing you from getting more joy and fulfillment from life. Our work together is done in a safe, supportive, and compassionate atmosphere. I can help you improve relationships, increase self-esteem, find relief from depression and anxiety.

My approach is rooted in my somatic, neurobiology, and mindfulness training while integrating other approaches like solution-focused work, IFS, ACT, DBT, CBT, and a psychodynamic lens.
Taking New Clients: Everyone has the essential ingredients for positiv change. Individuals and couples who seek my support are in a difficult moment or intersection in life; seeking resolution between internal and external pressures; seeking satisfaction and harmony in relationships, identity, career, society, etc. I support clients who seek to deepen and broaden their perspective on who they are and who they want to become by examining self-limiting narratives, refining self-mastery, and cultivating self-compassion. BIPOC and multicultural clients often seek my support as well as those who want more from therapy than just insight.

I have pursued postgraduate training in psychodynamic / psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
Do you seek a place where you can feel safe enough to express worrying emotions, thoughts, and experiences that you may not typically reveal? Are you finding it difficult to resolve and manage these issues on your own? I offer a secure space for working through a range of issues and symptoms. My style is collaborative and curious. I listen carefully and we work together to explore and make sense of what you are experiencing. This deeper awareness can result in an inner freedom, improved relationships, and more satisfying ways of living.

Psychodynamic (Jungian) orientation: Just as the conscious mind, the unconscious mind can be directional.
Everyone needs to talk about their personal concerns, emotions, and life challenges. At times, it is best to talk to someone who is not a friend or family member. I provide a place and process for these personal conversations. I will support you as you resolve old issues and emotional blocks, find new insights and choices, develop new ways of coping and acting. I am interactive and supportive. I work with individuals experiencing stress/anxiety/trauma; depression; childhood and relationship issues; life transitions - divorce, the death of someone important, illness, and transitions of midlife or becoming an elder; ADHD.

I draw from EMDR, attachment, and psychodynamic therapy, while also utilizing other tools tailored to each individual I work with.
I see individuals who are experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety, body image issues, relational distress, spiritual issues, grief/loss, and eating disorders. Many of my clients are trying to cope with the effects of trauma in their life in addition to feelings of insecurity, perfectionism, self-hatred or shame. If any of this sounds like you, I want you to know that you are not alone and counseling can help. It takes great courage to seek counseling, and I can help you develop insight into yourself, learn new tools for coping, find your voice, and seek healing from your past.

I draw on contemporary relational, emotionally-focused, attachment/developmental, and psychodynamic , approaches to develop a unique and specifically appropriate response to your concerns.
Only accepting group therapy referrals. In my experience, life is better and easier if you have someone that understands you, sees it from your point of view, and helps you navigate through it. A good therapist is like a fellow traveler who journeys with us into awareness, facilitating the insight necessary to heal and grow. I am a passionate facilitator of this process, helping my clients make sense of their lives and relationships, heal what's kept them stuck, explore new ways of being and live richly. The therapy we do is deep and has long-lasting effects, and the changes become your second nature, even after therapy ends.

I employ an integrative style drawing from CBT, ERP, Psychodynamic theory, EFT, Existential perspectives, and Developmental Psychology among others.
It's tough out there, isn't it? Perhaps you're struggling with feelings of sadness, isolation, futility, and emptiness. Perhaps you find yourself worrying about the past, present, future, and all things in between. You may struggle with trauma or reflexive self-criticism. Maybe you've tried therapy before, and been disappointed by formulaic notions of growth and healing. It's certainly easy to feel discouraged.

I utilize a modern relational and collaborative approach along with psychodynamic theory, CBT-based skills, and a host of trauma-informed/trauma-specific practices. My theory is that a combination of a deeper understanding of self, coupled with practical skills, can lead to sustained self-discovery and curiosity, desired personality changes, and relief. I specialize in working with individuals who struggle to regulate emotions and mood, are working through the impacts of childhood trauma in adulthood/young adulthood, are experiencing interpersonal issues, existential dread, anxiety, depression, and/or chronic suicidality.

I believe that sometimes, we need a little help to touch ground long enough to hear the sound of our own voice, to gain insight, and to remember what it is that makes us feel truly alive. Therapy can be a mirror to see ourselves from a new angle, uncovering unconscious patterns, and seeing all of our parts from a new and accepting perspective. I work with pre-teen, teen, and adult clients with depression, anxiety, childhood trauma, or other psychological symptoms that leave them feeling alone or distressed, and in need of support.

I take a relational approach to psychotherapy, and work to create a space for clients to be genuine and transparent as we work together to address their needs. I am a good fit for individuals who are looking to gain deeper self-awareness and insight, increase meaning and fulfillment in their lives, and reduce mental health symptoms that interfere with their well-being. Those dealing with interpersonal difficulties, in addition to other mental health struggles such as anxiety, traumatic stress, and depression, often benefit from my integrative, relational approach to psychotherapy.

I believe that each of us have great capacity for personal growth. Psychotherapy can be a powerful and effective modality in the process of better understanding ourselves and in working toward change. I specialize in attachment-related issues that often result in vulnerabilities that affect one's current relationships as well as one's sense of self worth. I also have a focus on identity issues related to race, culture, and sexual orientation with a focus on the experience of Asian, biracial, and multiracial people. Additionally, I have extensive experience in treating healthcare workers affected by trauma and burnout.

Knowing that it is usually an experience of pain or frustration that prompts people to seek counseling, my goal is to provide a safe place for you to effectively move through it. Often that pain comes from unmet needs, harmful experiences, or coping systems that no longer serve you. I want to work with you, to offer reflection, understanding, information, and new windows to help you experience relief and a sense of well being. Approaches include insight oriented talk therapy, mindfulness, EMDR, and art therapy and are chosen on what would be most appropriate to your individual goals.

Do you feel overwhelmed, confused, or stuck? You have more days when it's all you can do to drag yourself out of bed? You have trouble falling asleep because you can't stop worry about what's going to happen? Or you wake up from nightmares that make no sense? Counseling can help. I truly believe everyone has the ability to heal. First, we will develop a safe and respectful relationship. Then, dependent on what works best for you we put together a plan to address your goals. Often I incorporate 'experiential' therapies to complement 'talk' therapy.

At Connections First we have faith in the power of connection: with your inner life and to the outer world through meaningful relationships. We believe that mental health is an effect of feeling more deeply connected to ourselves and to others through the safety of transparent, emotionally honest relationships. How we communicate with ourselves and those we care about determines whether we possess integrity and feel empowered to express ourselves as human beings. Much of our symptoms are the effects of emotional, psychological, and physical isolation and self-alienation which can even happen when we are surrounded by other people.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
