As an integrative therapist, I utilize the following therapies: • Narrative Therapy • Attachment Therapy • Dialectical Behavior Therapy • Internal Family Systems • Emotionally Focused Therapy.
There are so many reasons why people seek therapy. It could be a life transition, anxiety, depression, divorce, blended families or tough teenagers. Sometimes in life people lose a sense of who they truly are and seek to find what more accurately reflects them. Overall, most people are looking for a space to process and make meaning of life experiences, behaviors and reactivity. Whatever your reason for seeking therapy, good for you for having the courage to take the first step. My goal is to make the process of finding a therapist authentic and comfortable because I value the meaningful relationship between therapist and client.

Whether you have tried therapy in the past and are seeking support again, or are just beginning your therapy journey – I’m so glad you are here. I believe healing happens in relationship – to ourselves, to our communities, and to others in our lives who we care deeply for. Through Somatic Mindfulness (body centered), Emotionally Focused Therapy ( EFT ), and Self-Compassion based theories, I view my role as a guide along the road back to yourself, the ones you love, and the life you want to feel present in.

Only accepting group therapy referrals. In my experience, life is better and easier if you have someone that understands you, sees it from your point of view, and helps you navigate through it. A good therapist is like a fellow traveler who journeys with us into awareness, facilitating the insight necessary to heal and grow. I am a passionate facilitator of this process, helping my clients make sense of their lives and relationships, heal what's kept them stuck, explore new ways of being and live richly. The therapy we do is deep and has long-lasting effects, and the changes become your second nature, even after therapy ends.

I employ an integrative style drawing from CBT, ERP, Psychodynamic theory, EFT , Existential perspectives, and Developmental Psychology among others.
It's tough out there, isn't it? Perhaps you're struggling with feelings of sadness, isolation, futility, and emptiness. Perhaps you find yourself worrying about the past, present, future, and all things in between. You may even feel you lack a clear sense of who you are, and how you would like to live. Maybe you've tried therapy before, and been disappointed by formulaic notions of growth and healing. It's certainly easy to feel discouraged.

CURRENTLY NOT Accepting Clients. I love my work as a couples' counselor. As a Gottman Seven Principles Program Educator, I have 20+ years experience helping couples & individuals improve communication, rekindle intimacy and improve awareness of patterns that may result in defensiveness, feeling "not heard" by your partner. In individual therapy, I create a warm environment so clients feel comfortable to share their issues. Together we develop goals & strategies for cultivating positive changes. In couples work, we address problematic communication to change those patterns from ineffective to effective habits & behaviors.

I utilize a feminist, trauma-sensitive approach to support the healing of those who have experienced various forms of abuse, interpersonal violence and trauma. I use Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help clients understand, appreciate and reclaim control over the emotional and physiological responses that can come with trauma and PTSD. I acknowledge that the client is the expert in their life experience, and work to promote communication, coping skills, boundary setting and interpersonal dynamics that will facilitate the client's transition from surviving to thriving.

People's stories are one of the most valuable things we have in life. If you want to have a meaningful relationship with someone, you need to be able to understand your own story. Helping individuals to develop and enhance their personal stories is at the crux of my work as a therapist. We all have public and private lives, and I believe the power of developing the stories behind these separate selves is how people vividly change their lives.

We all deserve to have our stories witnessed & responded to with empathy & care. This is why I am committed to holding space for those healing from religious harm, processing grief, & individuals who identify as biracial & monoracial Black, Indigenous, and people of color. As a multiracial & relationally based therapist, I recognize that engaging in therapy can be vulnerable if not intimidating & it is important for your full identity to be seen.

As we walk through life, we sometimes encounter a difficult problem that feels impossible to solve. Although facing such a challenge can be extremely confusing and painful, it may also be an invitation to recognize an old habit, belief, relationship pattern, or lifestyle that no longer serves you and a time to explore new possibilities. I am honored to be able accompany and guide my clients on this sacred journey of healing, growth, and discovery.

At Connections First we have faith in the power of connection: with your inner life and to the outer world through meaningful relationships. We believe that mental health is an effect of feeling more deeply connected to ourselves and to others through the safety of transparent, emotionally honest relationships. How we communicate with ourselves and those we care about determines whether we possess integrity and feel empowered to express ourselves as human beings. Much of our symptoms are the effects of emotional, psychological, and physical isolation and self-alienation which can even happen when we are surrounded by other people.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
