My experience as an adoptive, foster and biological mom opened my eyes to mental health needs and I/DD. I lived in Liberia for nearly three years, which is where I met and married my husband. We have a mixed race
family
and have had to work to blend the best parts of each culture into our own
family
culture. For the past 11 years I have worked for county mental health serving initially as a skills trainer in homes, schools and the community. For 5 years I was a wraparound care coordinator, which inspired me to pursue my master’s degree in social work. Since 2017 I have provided therapy in both clinic and school settings.

, I believe that a meaningful, authentic relationship between the client and therapist is essential to the process of healing. My goal is to create a collaborative and safe space for us to enact change in your life and a space where you feel listened to.

You're not feeling so good about things right now, and you're running out of ideas to make it better. Maybe your relationship with a partner,
family
member or friend has gone sideways, leaving you feeling hurt, misunderstood or alone. Maybe your relationship with yourself is struggling, weighted by negative thoughts and feelings that don't accurately reflect who you really are or who you want to be. You're not your best self right now, and you know it. You're tired of feeling this way—and you want to change it.

BEING WELL…knowing who you are as an individual. Life brings experiences that are difficult to adjust to and live peacefully. It is common to have worries in relationships, work/life balance, stressful experiences, emotional difficulties, and coping with
family
interactions, past or current. These worries lead to change in mood, low self-worth, and provoke negative thinking. My approach focuses on walking along beside you and focusing on your individual strengths to move through a difficult time in your life. In addition to walking along beside you, you will gain insight and awareness of your current coping skills.

My reason for doing so was simple: a
family
member went through a life-threatening crisis and benefitted tremendously from therapy.
I work with a variety of concerns; trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, abandonment, and others. I use an integrative approach (why limit ourselves?) leaning heavily on attachment theory. I have also spent significant time working with children and adolescents with complex trauma and/or abandonment. I believe that people have inherent resiliency, even if it seems lost for a time. My belief is that people can find it within themselves to heal and grow, and that is my focus. My time with clients is spent looking for the ways in which that healing and growth can be realized.

Relationships are a key part of our lives. In my work - whether it is with an individual, a couple, or a
family
- I look at the relationships and other systems which impact the presenting problem. In approaching my work with people in this manner, I am able to see things from a broader point of view which, in turn, increases my ability to be helpful. I believe in the strengths that all people have, and I draw on those strengths as we work together toward the change they seek.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
