I approach therapy as a collaborative process with my clients identifying areas they want to improve then working with them toward achieving those goals. Whether in relation to managing general life stressors, family or relationship problems, addiction, mood or anxiety disturbance, sexually-related challenges, or employment issues, I conceptualize my role as supporting clients to identify, then enact the choices most likely to produce the changes they desire.

Our lives are filled with relationships: friendship, significant other, parent, child, intimate partner, etc. When our relationships are struggle, so do other areas of life. Frequently, feelings of depression, anger, or stress coincide with disconnection of a significant, meaningful relationship. This feeling of disconnection is threatening and scary; allowing for thoughts of abandonment, and feeling alone. Unfortunately, this results in an increased feeling of disconnection in our most important relationships.

I have advanced training in evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT, IFS and Gott man Method relationship counseling.
My goal is to provide a supportive environment and to establish a working relationship with individuals and families seeking strategies to improve their overall sense of well-being and daily functioning. In our first appointment, we will work to identify current concerns and learn skills to help address stress, anxiety, mood, motivation, problem solving and improved communication. Over time, I hope that clients will gain insight into the origins of current issues, develop an array of useful coping and interpersonal skills and more adaptive thought processes to create lasting and positive changes.

Over several decades I have worked with people who are in many different circumstances.
I strive to provide care that is customized to your unique strengths and weaknesses. The approach I use is called "integrative" in that thoughts, actions, emotions, and relationships are addressed. I understand that it isn't always easy to talk about problems. I'm patient, and I ask plenty of questions to better understand. To me therapy implies collaboration, where we both work hard toward successful outcomes. I tend to be a pretty active therapist, but I also know how to quietly listen when that fits you better.

As a psychologist specializing in children and adolescents I am best suited to provide a clear idea of problems, developing an effective treatment plan, working with families, schools and other support services to create effective positive change. Only by focusing on parents' concerns, supporting their parenting style can satisfactory treatment occur.

I am a therapist with over thirty years clinical experience. Over the years I’ve worked with and helped hundreds of individuals and couples through a wide range of difficulties. I’ve learned that there are a lot ways to help, to heal and to promote personal growth, and that no particular approach fits every person or situation. For some individuals problems arise from recent traumatic events, while others struggle with childhood trauma or neglect. Some have disabling anxiety, chronic sleep problems, self-destructive behaviors, self-worth issues or general depression.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
