I believe experience shapes a person into who they are, making every individual extraordinarily unique. Unfortunately, this concept can get lost in comparison, jealousy, resentment, loneliness, and self-hatred — emotions that devalue our individual identities and distance us from our sense of worth. My goal in therapy is to help clients rediscover and embrace their inherent value. I do this through a combination of motivational interviewing, existential thought, and cognitive behavioral interventions, guiding each person toward self-understanding and empowerment.

Difficult transitions, divorce, family struggles, abuse, suicidal thoughts or attempts, anger, anxiety, trauma, loneliness, depression, and obsessive thoughts are all areas I have treated.
Kids and teens have difficult and confusing things happen and need a space to process so they can move forward with freedom, confidence, and hope. You are not alone in looking for support for your child. Most kids don't want to sit still and talk about their feelings. They want to be heard and seen and have fun. We keep this in mind as combine various research based methods such as play therapy, sand tray therapy, EMDR and talk therapy to create a personalized intentional experience that is engaging, fun, and healing. I'm also Christian and my office is housed on a church campus.

I know that for trauma survivors, trusting a stranger with your story can feel terrifying. Maybe you're feeling immense shame and fear disclosing parts of your past and try to shut everything out by keeping busy, engaging in risky behaviors or self-harm. You may have beliefs that you are a bad person, undeserving of healing or unloveable. I strive to create a nurturing, normalizing, non-judgmental and grounding space where clients can feel comfortable exploring their internal experiences and gaining clarity into how past events have shaped them.

I have over 20 years as a social worker primarily in community suicide prevention.
I believe the first step in therapy is to create room for ALL of our thoughts and feelings and work to develop a new network of insights and behaviors that allow us to be more present, more aware and to live more fully. However we also know that so many life stressors and challenges get in the way and contribute to our struggling relationships, compulsive behaviors, addictions, feelings of hopelessness, incessant worries or past traumas that weighs us down. Holding space for ourselves and our feelings and emotions will help us to navigate these challenges easier and will allow our more authentic and best selves to emerge.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
