I specialize in working with people experiencing difficult life transitions. These may be adjusting to a disability, the death of a loved one, changes in family structure or employment among other things. I consider difficult life transitions to include times when we experience increased stress requiring changing coping skills. I create a safe and affirming environment for you to begin recognizing that you are not on this journey alone. By seeking counseling you have the opportunity to learn new information and patterns that no longer serve to move you in the direction you want to go.

Thank you for viewing my counseling profile. I have had the privilege of working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and challenges. I have helped individuals working through issues related to self-esteem, depression, anxiety, various addictions, and relational or life transition issues. Many of the people that I have worked with share a common trait regardless of the reason they seek counseling: previous trauma(s).

My approach to therapy comes from a collaborative, client-centered and unconditional positivity to assist you in believing in yourself, to find the courage and resilience to face your struggles, and help you reconstruct a life balance. I find that when I hold a space for clients and their struggles and defenses, they learn they can begin to trust in another human being, be heard and understood, and eventually learn to trust themselves, and even learn to like themselves.

I am constantly humbled by the ways those I work with teach me and make me a better human, and I believe we all have within us the innate, resilient power to heal ourselves. You want your life to look different, but you may not know where to start or even what that means. I believe the therapeutic relationship thrives on genuine empathy and nonjudgment, which supports change. I enjoy working with people to improve their quality of life by healing trauma and challenging unhelpful patterns of behavior and thought, and have experience and interest in supporting individuals with trauma recovery and severe persistent mental illness.

All of us experience some confusion, anxiety, sadness, or conflict periodically, but if daily life becomes characterized by those feelings, something about life is out of balance. Do you feel stuck in a relationship or job, or troubled with negative, or fearful thoughts that won't go away? Sometimes we can loose a sense of hopefulness and pleasure about life. Perhaps we experienced a recent or far distant loss that left us floundering in sadness and grief. Maybe we have become weary searching for spiritual fulfillment, yet finding most ideas of a higher power to be disheartening or unbelievable.

Sorry I am not able to accept new clients at this time. I have been a clinician for over 40 years and offer energy psychotherapy and counseling to adults & teens, primarily for healing from trauma. Energy psychology is a gentle approach to resolving problems. It often offers a quicker and deeper resolution than talk therapy alone can provide. I also work with anxiety, depression, and many other problems.

Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed with the uncertainty and intensity of these times? Even when things are difficult, I believe it is possible to experience connection, meaning, and hope. Although it can be hard to see in the midst of it, our struggles can clarify what's most important and offer opportunities to invite intuitive wisdom to emerge to explore new ways of being. With a collaborative and holistic approach, I strive to bring warmth, unconditional acceptance, compassion, and cultural humility to create a space that fosters a sense of safety and self-exploration.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
