Trauma is a highly complex and personal experience. Everyone's experience and definition of trauma is different. Among both professionals and clients, it is often incredibly misunderstood. It affects us across physical, social, emotional, and spiritual bounds. It compromises our ability to process sensory input and renders us incapable of communicating at times. Traumatic experiences can make us feel "small" and incompetent, incapable of managing basic tasks at times, or we may even develop intermittent or
chronic pain
.

ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS - TELEHEALTH AVAILABLE. My approach has been described as more practical and holistic as I believe we do our best given the circumstances. I believe we are our own experts but we sometimes need some extra support to get through difficult times or unstick ourselves emotionally. For me, therapy is a collaborative process that unfolds via conversation. I go where you go and ask lots of questions along the way. My areas of interest include anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions,
pain
management, brain functioning, trauma, and other negative life experiences.

Waitlist is closed at this time. If you have been referred directly to me by a provider or from Hospice feel free to contact me further. There is a Buddhist contemplation:
pain
is inevitable but suffering is a choice. I don’t know if I believe that suffering is a “choice”, but there are skills that we can learn and practice that will reduce our suffering even in the midst of
pain
, discomfort, or unfortunate events. Together we will work to build and expand your toolbox so you may fully engage in your life.

AT THIS TIME I AM NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. At times life’s difficulties and transitions can cause us to feel overwhelmed, unsettled or stuck. We might experience grief,
pain
and trauma, or find our relationships difficult to navigate. We long for deeper connections, a sense of belonging and for meaningful relationships. Such times can highlight the opportunity to become more self-aware and develop ways to stay in the presence of ‘what is’. We can reassess what matters to us, build on strengths and resiliency, address unhelpful patterns, heal and move toward living more fully.

All people are one of a kind, but here's where we're all alike: All of us come from a personal history and context: A past that got us through to where we are now. And "Right Now" is where all the choices and opportunities are. Some things we may want to change, other things we may choose to accept as they are. Therapy can be helpful in understanding yourself well enough to know which is which. And therapy can offer some things you may need to go forward with your choices: Hope, perspective and someone who believes in you while you practice believing in yourself.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
