Engaging a Mindfulness-based, cognitive approach can greatly benefit anyone exploring lifespan challenges and/or their journey towards personal growth. The most powerful relationship you will ever have is the relationship with yourself. Specializing in couples and individual counseling, I have over 28 years of experience addressing marital issues, trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief. In addition to being a psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, I also provide a space (drumming circles) for individuals and/or groups to experience a healing approach through sound and self-expression.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Grief Counseling, Pre- marital Counseling, Spiritual and Faith development, and Trauma work are approaches I am trained in.
Calling for help can be intimidating. Hopefully I can make your first contact a safe experience. Our initial session is geared to getting to know each other, to hear your story, what prompted you to seek therapy, and talk about your goals. By the end of this session we should have a good idea if we will work well together. If not, I will be happy to give you referrals. Psychotherapy is the intentional process of seeking change, a move towards healing. It is to that end that we can work together to achieve your goals as I offer my experience and training.

If you need to re-connect, re-ignite, or even resurrect your marriage , then come see me. Perhaps as an individual, you feel stuck in a certain emotional state such as frustration, anxiety or depression, and you're tired of it. Maybe your not making adjustments to life after a recent loss. Such challenges can lead to isolation, helplessness, and feeling disconnected from those you used to be close to. As humans we co-regulate, meaning we need another person (therapist) to help us sort out our chaos. In the process of "sorting out" and gaining new skill sets ( one's not learned in childhood) a new hope and joy can emerge.

I began my journey as a therapist first by seeking work as a teacher. I graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Sciences in 2013, which led me to work as a preschool teacher until 2017. Working with families in this capacity made me see just how much need there is for therapists who work from a systemic perspective. It was this that compelled me to enroll at Capella University, from which I earned a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2022

I work with a variety of adult clients. Most people who consult me are confronting anxiety, depression, substance abuse, stress related disorders, and marital problems. In assessing the type of problems, people present, I look at lifestyle, current coping mechanisms, how we think and perceive our problem, our personal histories and what strategies specifically people have used to address their concerns. The use of mindfulness, learning to be more present in the moment allows for reduced reactivity, new ways of coping, problem solving, and relating to others in ones environment. It can lead to healing and transformation.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
