Everyone experiences emotional distress in their lives and sometimes this can become overwhelming and lead to depression, anxiety, fear, and thoughts of self-harm. I believe people can recover from these symptoms. I employ an eclectic approach which may include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR). All therapy is centered on the goals developed by the client and therapist.

I've been helping people with the "hard stuff" for a long time. I decided to work in the field of domestic violence in 1998 by way of intervention programs for both men and women who were convicted of an assault or who self identified as wanting to end their use of abuse with their loved ones. I opened my own business in 2000 specializing in anger management, domestic violence, parent education for children and teens, co-parenting education, and a program for parents who were convicted of abuse or neglect. I became a mediator in 2014 and I have conducted thousands of child custody, parenting plan, and family conflict mediations.

What does it mean to be erotically marginalized and how can we as mental health professionals serve such individuals holistically, effectively, and compassionately? This is the question that drives my work as a therapist. Do you experience struggles with intimacy that are tied to your identity as queer, kinky, polyamorous, a sex worker, and/or an individual living with chronic illness and/or or disability? Have struggles with food and body image made you feel like a stranger in your own skin? Have past hurts robbed you of the connections you crave for long enough? There is no need to feel alone in these struggles anymore.

Finding someone to speak with and asking for help is a courageous step. I understand how it can be to share personal information with someone you have just met and I will hold this position with respect. Many people come to therapy for support with anxiety, depression, stress, loss and relationship issues. For some, therapy is more about understanding themselves, changing patterns of behavior that are outdated and they are making efforts to move forward. Therapy is not about advice giving, although many times, problem solving is part of the process. Change seems more likely when there is someone listening to us and we feel encouraged. It's also useful to speak with someone who has knowledge of the most effective strategies for change. It is my hope that whatever your reason for seeking therapy, together we can create a useful experience for you.

My work as a leadership and life coach is to support your unique journey. If you're feeling stalled out at work; if you're seeking to rekindle passion and purpose, a coaching conversation can be transformative. We'll identify aspirational goals and create a realistic plan for change, with milestones to mark progress. I draw upon the research of Dr. Brené Brown and I am a trained teacher of the Mindfulness and Self-Compassion curricula of Dr. Kristin Neff and Dr. Chris Germer. I offer the IEQ9 Enneagram Personality Assessment as a starting point for inquiry. The coaching conversation can bring you back to life. Let's begin.

Notice: While I am not currently accepting new clients, I would love to chat with you about referrals or getting onto my waitlist. I believe that we are relational beings, and the pathway towards healing is through connection. Together, we can explore how our experiences impact the way we show up in our current relationships with both others and ourselves. It is my role to set a compassionate, non-judgmental container that allows for deeply authentic self-expression. From this place, we can illuminate blind spots, examine coping strategies, and begin the work of healing on a nervous system level.

Sex. Intimacy. Pleasure. — These topics feel intimidating and vulnerable to talk about. You’ve googled how to have better sex. You are feeling discouraged about your sex life and wondering if there's more to explore. Maybe you can’t even think about sex without feeling uncomfortable, much less talk about it. You want to feel confident in yourself, reconnect with your partner, and heal from the past. You think you are ready to open up, get curious about yourself, and tell your story. Now what? Let's see if we are a good fit!

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
