I am a retired high tech executive who has embarked on a career as a life coach specializing in addiction counseling. As a State-certified counselor, I’ve helped men from 20 to 60 years of age and from many backgrounds. However, having worked in the corporate world, I’m uniquely qualified to help people struggling with substance abuse in high pressure environments. Addiction is a secondary issue in my view. The problem is most people approach life in a reactive, rather than proactive mode. This usually results in sub-optimal outcomes. I will help you with personal and professional life planning to get your life on track.

Life is difficult and complicated and we all need help at times when we get stuck. Getting unstuck is often short term work. Avoiding getting stuck over and over again is longer term work. Symptom versus problem resolution.

For over 20 years, when anxiety, adversity, and the overwhelming ways these can manifest have made life feel exhausting, I’ve collaborated with people who want to understand the story that drives them, and craft skills for a healthier, more hopeful path forward. When life surprises us, when worry becomes the norm, and our reactions to it all only seem to cause more problems, it helps to partner with someone to address it. That process can feel impossible to begin, but when you are struggling with sleep, a sense of panic, irritability, over-thinking or over-drinking, then finding relief and the skills to maintain it is vital.

In my years of therapy, I have learned that the fundamental problem for most people is that they don’t know how beautiful they are as people. Perhaps it is life events, the way one grew up, or the things that one has done to themselves or others that hides the potential we all possess. I tend to treat conditions that I’ve either struggled with myself or have helped loved ones to get through, increasing the likelihood that I will have some personal insight into what you’re dealing with. I aim to create a safe and non-judgmental space, believing that everyone needs to be accepted for who they are.

Living in moments of emotional distress due to challenges in life is a common human experience. Seeking therapy to help work through these challenges is a vulnerable and brave decision. My psychology and counseling practice is the expansion of identities through awareness and compassion not just solving problems. Your journey has been one with twists and turns and taking the first step to contact me may feel uncertain. Given life can feel like a maze, I make our initial contact straightforward as possible. For 25 years I’ve helped people clear the way to the freedom of their true nature in psychotherapy as well as hypnotherapy. My practice reflects my personal commitment to ongoing growth and expansion. My approach is direct and practical, integrative and holistic. Having been in practice 30 years I offer you a plethora of skills, tools, training and experience. Regardless of presenting issues most people seek counsel because something is not working and feels painful. This pain comes from resisting the call to make changes, literally blocking your aliveness/energy making you feel unhappy and "stuck". My role is to offer ways to release this resistance at all levels: mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I tailor sessions to meet your individual needs.

"YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND ANOTHER PERSON'S EXPERIENCE UNTIL YOU WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES." That's especially true regarding the thoughts and feelings that often surround deeply personal issues. My practice is informed by my own life experiences as well as a nuanced understanding of the complexity of human nature. Together we will build the degree of trust and rapport necessary for you to: identify maladaptive patterns, challenge negative beliefs, gain insight into past and present events and most importantly, use this information to create permanent positive change in your relationships and the way you think and feel about yourself.

I work with individuals suffering from trauma, chronic pain, addiction, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, and various life transitions. I utilize Mindfulness-based and Somatic approaches to help clients cultivate mind-body awareness and create emotional well-being. Somatic Experiencing is one of the approaches that is very effective in helping people overcome the effects of accumulated, chronic stress. It integrates neuroscience, attachment theory and mindfulness to help you restore a sense of balance to your emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual life.

These are extremely stressful times but you do not have to face it all alone. Depression and anxiety can lead, if left untreated, to isolation and self-destructive behaviors. Relationships may suffer and facing each day can feel overwhelming! In therapy, we work on restoring relationships. We work together to understand why you do what you do - then, change will come! Destructive patterns can be conquered. Trauma, stress, conflict, and great loss CAN lose their power. I love working with individual adults, families, couples, and teens who are ready to overcome their challenges.

TIRED of VIDEO? I SEE SOME PATIENTS IN-PERSON. You must pass a screening and adhere to personally protective behaviors in and outside my office. A mask may not be required if you have not had COVID. I have a sophisticated air ventilation, filtration, dehumidifier system, and air-wall between myself and a patient, more, reviewed by peers and public health. There is 1 hour between appointment to sanitize surfaces and ventilate the air. Office policy follows CDC and OHA guidelines. I provide an emotionally and physically safe environment. There is less than 1 chance in 5,000 (12-1-20) of becoming infected in my office

The therapeutic relationship is a very important part of therapy. Often times clients explore their relational attachments, bonds and experiences through their relationship with their therapist. I aim to provide a safe and comfortable environment. I believe everyone can achieve an optimum state of health. Often times humans do not change until facing a crisis, or having suffered. Together we can help you to learn more about who you are and how you relate to the world around you and what may need to change. We all need to be comfortable with change as “the only thing that is constant is change” (philosopher Heraclitus)

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
