My job is to facilitate an understanding of what is causing you pain and getting in your way of creating your best life. As your therapist, I don’t “just listen.” I use an integrative approach, combining several modalities to create the most effective treatment for each client. I am honored to work with people facing challenges in chronic illness (ALS, early on-set Dementias, MS, Parkinson's, TBI, Stroke, Cancer), end of life, caregiver burnout, finding meaning, depression/anxiety, non-dominant gender, romantic orientations, trauma, toxic masculinity and Sex-Positivity.
Waitlist Available. I practice from mindfulness, compassion focused and positive psychology approaches. We resist to the very normal experience of suffering, as if something has gone terribly wrong. In this awareness we acknowledge that we are disconnected from the fullness of our experience and ourselves; the mind, body and our relationships. We can incline toward your experience and yourself in these areas with curiosity, cultivating tenderness, interconnectedness, and wise attention. Within all of us these precious core values have a capacity to hold space and a sense of wholeness that runs deeper than our problems.

It is quite common to experience difficulties throughout life. When these difficulties arise an individual may seek the assistance of a counselor or therapist in order to better understand and deal with the issues. Deciding to seek counseling is the first step in change and is often one of the hardest decisions to make. I work with clients who are trying to cope with anxiety, depression, early childhood trauma, sexual abuse, PTSD, and family integration problems. I am someone who is interested in listening to your concerns and in helping you develop a better understanding of these issues.

Life can knock us off course in a lot of different ways, I’m here to help you find your own path to living the way you want to live. Anxiety, depression, burnout, along with feelings of isolation and low self-esteem can prevent us from living our lives the way we’d like to. When this happens, we tend to use whatever skills we have to cope but sometimes these tried and true methods end up falling short. Talking with a therapist can help shore up the skills we have and help to develop new skills to cope with the challenges of everyday life.

I help individuals and couples develop resources to work more mindfully with impermanence. Aging, illness, death, identity transitions, relationships – all bring us face to face with fear, anxiety, and insecurity. The courage and wisdom to live through change and loss become possible with a clear, steady commitment to loving oneself and others. I work with my clients to become curious, have a sense of humor, feel grace, cultivate friendships, and embody kindness in order to access joy in the everyday moments of life, even with life's many challenges.

Many of my clients need help with anxiety, pain, bad habits, relationship issues, sexuality, fears, and phobias. Issues my clients have and specific treatment areas (see my web site) range from tooth grinding, reducing chronic pain, improving performance in sports, stopping smoking, anxiety about medical or dental procedures, sex issues, sleep problems, spiritual conflicts, setting goals and addressing mental "blocks," resolving past issues in life, to improving relationships. I help people learn to relax and how to have personal "tools" to "dial down" stress, pain, and anxiety to become healthy, happy, and centered.

I provide counseling to people experiencing trauma, anxiety and depression, gay men, people living with HIV/AIDS, queer people, and families.
We all have our own ways of overcoming or compensating for feelings of inadequacy. My work involves validating clients and helping them find clarity amidst the chaos of distractions that impede engagement in their present experience. I believe the fundamental vehicle of change is the relationship between the counselor and the client. For me, therapy is a collaborative approach in which the therapist helps clients confront their issues by staying present and exploring their narratives and relationships through different dynamics and perspectives.

I welcome people who are facing any number of challenges including life transitions such as divorce, job loss, illness, death of a loved one; all shifting the ground beneath us in dramatic ways. What worked no longer works. My training as a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher complements training and practice in psychotherapy addressing a dysregulated emotion system resulting in various symptoms such as anxiety, panic, depression, and identity disturbance and sometimes even a desire to die or hurt oneself. There can be a painful sense of isolation and feeling unmoored. There is a way out; first understanding, then tools to heal.

Unexpected life events, changes or losses in relationships, job and career transitions, new personal roles (student/graduate, parent/empty-nester, employee/boss) and anxiety or depression can bring us both challenges and opportunities.
You cannot always choose the terrain, but you can choose your path in life. We all come to therapy for the same reason: to experience true happiness in our lives. Sometimes the past can interfere with our enjoyment of the present and block us from fully experiencing life. Likewise, stressful experiences in the present can create obstacles. Perhaps now is the time for you to reflect on the past. Or you might simply want guidance in bringing gentle, non-judgmental awareness to the present to help you move forward.

It HAS been a wild ride, and it looks like this might continue for a while. If you are looking for support to deal with the anxiety, depression, transition and trauma that is knocking at your door these days, or if your child or adolescent is needing support with stress and emotional challenges, you are certainly not alone. I work with clients who are wanting to know themselves better, to build self-trust, and who are eager to commit to taking steps to get themselves unstuck. Let's face it: we had problems before this pandemic, but now they may seem...louder. Some of us have even taken stock of life and want a complete change.

I have experience working with depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma, LGBT issues, professional and personal identity, transition, relationship issues, substance abuse, veterans issues, and grief and loss.
During our lives, we encounter experiences that can move us away from a direct connection to ourselves. Influences from family, friends, peers, jobs, and the greater culture can affect how we view and express ourselves. We can become conditioned to thinking, feeling and behaving in a way that is incompatible with who we really are and what we want in our lives. This compromises our ability to value our unique identity and to express and apply ourselves, and our strengths. I will help you to identify, understand and remove barriers that are keeping you from realizing your fullest potential.

Teletherapy
Teletherapy and Online counseling have grown enormously as a medium for therapy since the advent of social distancing. Most therapists are happy to provide sessions by video or phone.

All professionals are licensed to provide video therapy to clients within the State in which they hold their license. Cross State licensing exists, but is rare.

So if you're a client in Washington, this list of teletherapists are licensed to provide therapy to you online (by phone, video or text based chat) because they are within your state. They are sorted nearest to furthest, with professionals in Washington listed first.

Teletherapy via phone or video can be very similar to conventional in person sessions. The message is the same, even if the medium is different. There are some advantages in the form of convenience, lack of travel and being in comfort of your own home. Set against those, professionals find it more difficult to read non-verbal signals of their clients, and you may find you yourself can be more easily distracted.
