I have received specialized training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety and depression, as well additional training in treating trauma.
Are you looking to learn skills that can help you with stress, anxiety, and self-doubt? You are conscientious and smart, yet feel overwhelmed by high demands or new changes. You have also experienced a difficult childhood, characterized by a significant traumatic event, or many incidents of invalidation, such as constant criticism by your parents. As someone who grew up in an emotionally-challenged family and has worked in highly competitive environments, I have likely been in your shoes. I have also worked as a psychologist at the on-site Wellness Center of Facebook, providing counseling to its employees.

My general approach to counseling is short-term and solution-focused with special attention to the working alliance, emotional dynamics, articulating values and constructing meaning, I am also trained in gestalt techniques, clinical hypno-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, art therapy, psychodrama, motivational interviewing, CBT, and ACT.
I graduated from a M.S. mental health counseling program at Eastern Washington University in 1995, got certified and ran a private practice in Seattle from 1995 through 2003. I worked in an outpatient community clinic, an inpatient psychiatric hospital, at retreat centers, and at a college counseling center until starting work on a PhD in Religious Studies and Psychology. I worked, studied, and lived in Europe, East Asia, and Africa before teaching 10 years at San Jose State University, so I am comfortable and confident working with very different sorts of people and I want everyone and anyone to feel welcome and at ease in my care.

With over sixteen years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, Michael has successfully helped many clients with complex issues that negatively impact their lives and their families in significant ways. He believes in treating clients holistically (mind, body, and spirit) and that the work clients do outside of therapy is as important as the work they do in session. The priorities are helping clients develop skills and providing resources that will support them to make lasting change.

I perceive life as a journey, consisting of searching meaning and coping: Meaning in different roles and aspects of life motivates us to move forward; coping is strategies to get there from here. However, at different life stages, we often got stuck because of different reasons. Thus, either we no longer can see the life meaning(s) and/or our coping strategies are no longer effective. We are likely stuck under these circumstances, which leads to sufferings. I believe that counseling is a catalyst to facilitate the needed changes & adjustments to get unstuck and to have a meaningful life again.
