My name is Michael Sheffield and alongside obtaining my Master's degree, I have been working in the counseling field with people for 3 years. Life is hitting you hard right now and you're stuck. My life and training are lent towards working with people experiencing depressed mood, anxiety, overactive/judgemental minds, relationship stress, pessimism, trauma, sleep disturbance, OCD, uncontrolled anger/mood, workaholism, and chronic pain.

As a resident in counseling with a unique cultural background, I bring a diverse perspective to the therapeutic process. Growing up in Europe has instilled in me a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and the importance of understanding the cultural context in counseling. My approach is tailored to each client’s unique needs and preferences, emphasizing collaboration, empowerment, and self-discovery. I'm equipped to handle a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, relationship issues, communication, life transitions and much more. Whatever obstacles or challenges you're facing, I'm here to help.

I believe strongly in the power of the human spirit and that the wisdom resides within each one of us on how best to facilitate our own healing, growth, and emancipation. My experience as a private music instructor and performing musician, as well as my work with the profoundly mentally ill, has solidified my belief in the healing power of the expressive arts. I will work with you through both verbal and non-verbal ways as a means of personal transformation and healing. My goal is to provide a safe, collaborative space for you to explore your concerns, process your life experiences, challenge unhelpful behaviors and thought patterns, learn healthy coping skills, and live a life aligned with your values. I focus on providing culturally alert, trauma-informed, strengths-based counseling for adults, adolescents, and couples through an existential, developmental, and social justice lens. I am also body/sex-positive and LGBTQIA+-affirming.

Sofia’s favorite work has been outpatient mental health, with patients of all ages and cultures—a Sovereign tribal Nation, pediatric work in Douglas AZ and more traditional outpatient locations. Sofia obtained her BA from Swarthmore college and her MSW (2003) from the University of Maryland. Sofia is certified in DBT skills, mediation and crisis management.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over a decade of experience working with children, teens, and adults with diverse backgrounds and presenting problems. I practice from a humanist perspective, meeting my clients where they are at with compassion and understanding. My goal for treatment is to assist my clients in understanding the patterns to their problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and developing the insight and skills needed to become the best version of themselves. I have found my passion in working with complex trauma, grief, and attachment as well as anxiety, depression, and every day stress.
