Hello! Thank you for visiting my Path profile. I am Ellen Jones, LCSW; a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of New York with over 20 years of experience in mental health. I graduated with a Doctorate of Social Work from Capella University, a Master of Social Work from Marywood University, and an undergraduate degree from the State University of NY-Suny Empire. My experience as a social worker encompasses ages from 5 to 99 years old. I have diverse experience in a variety of treatment settings.

I love working with people who are inquisitive and are interested in knowing themselves better. With over a decade of experience providing mental health treatment in New York I have found that therapy works best with a dose of humor and curiosity. As a therapist my goal is to build a connection that is warm, nonjudgemental, and deeply attuned. I find that only then do my clients feel comfortable exploring the difficult issues (i.e. "the shit") that brought them to therapy to begin with, because a little light helps everyone be less afraid of the dark.

I emphasize psychodynamic psychotherapy (I studied at the Psychoanalytic Institute of California), but shape my approach to each individual client and his or her needs and goals. It can be difficult to begin a new therapy relationship and be vulnerable, especially when relationships have been harmful in the past. I think taking the risk anyway reflects an inherent pull toward repairing the old wounds that restrict our capacity to live freely and joyfully. I love working with LGBTQIA folks, relationships, trauma, and difficulties with shame, self-love and acceptance.

I am a practicing clinician of over 20 years offering psychodynamic and cognitive-behavior psychotherapy to adults. CBT focuses on the development of concrete problem-solving techniques and is often ideal for problems that are highly acute and/or relatively circumscribed. Psychodynamic therapy examines emotional conflicts in relation to broader aspects of one's personality and life history. Its objective is to help individuals identify and overcome fears which may be unconscious and sometimes counter-intuitive. I also sometimes borrow concepts from meditation as well as sports psychology.
