I provide supportive services to individuals, couples, and families with concerns relating to life transitions, relationship struggles, grief and loss, as well as varying conditions of anxiety, depression, and other mood related conditions. My experience includes working with clients, ranging in age from adolescence to older adulthood, as they are working through difficult transitions and periods of time, when a sense of direction may feel lost and motivation is a struggle.

My extensive experience allows me to diagnose rapidly and choose reliable, research-backed strategies to help individuals struggling with anxiety or depression; families coping with a diagnosis of ADHD, or couples navigating relationship challenges, like infidelity, divorce, communication, and conflict.

I use an empathetic and empowering approach and favor interventions that focus on deepening your relationship with yourself, increasing your self-awareness and improving your relationships with others. I work with emotions, helping you to understand what, why and how to manage them and how to discover the wisdom they hold. I use a variety of strategies including cognitive/behavioral, psychodynamic, solution focused, dialectic behavior therapy and mindfulness meditation. I help you seek the sources of support available to you, both internal and external, and to create a balanced life that enables you to achieve your goals.

I have been a practicing therapist for over twenty-five years. I spent a number of years working with children, adolescents and families in a community-based agency. Now in private practice, my focus has been on the needs of adults and couples of all ages. All are struggling with issues related to mental health, self-esteem, trauma, relationship challenges and life stage concerns. Each stage brings its challenges.

Veris Hawkins-Smith, LPC, treats each client relationship as unique and constantly evolving. She is an expert at helping clients identify and understand unhealthy behaviors and create a plan for change.

The majority of my experience has been working with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety disorders, and relationship problems. I also have expertise with adult ADHD, Highly Sensitive Persons (HSPs), and Bipolar Disorder. I will offer you support, empathy, and helpful tools which address your particular symptoms. I enjoy getting to know each person and helping them create a more satisfying life.

Shawn earned his Master's Degree in Counseling from National Louis University and received his Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy from Lake Forest College. I began my career working in Mchenry County SASS which was the child and adolescent crisis response team. During that time I developed and honed skills that resonate with children and adolescents in order to help determine core issues and work towards action plans on how to progress on those issues. Anxiety, depression, and other symptoms can decrease your quality of life and make you feel not like yourself.

Each of us have the capacity to reach our fullest potentials. However, we often find ourselves stuck in negative patterns of thinking and being, unable to see other possibilities. Therapy allows us as individuals and family units to create meaning out of the various life experiences that we have encountered and can help to open up new ways of thinking, feeling, and being. I provide individual and family counseling in a comfortable and confidential setting. I treat those who experience issues related to trauma, anger management, self-injury, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, identity issues, and self-esteem challenges.
