Hi! My name is Melissa Cruz, I am a licensed mental health counselor at Buxani Counseling Care. Our mission is to empower our clients to resolve their issues and lead fulfilling lives through a mindful and tailored therapeutic approach to mental health.

I am of the belief that self love lends to a happier and more fulfilling life. Unfortunately, self love is not something that is intrinsic in many people raised in society today. Much of the work I do is to assist clients to gain a deeper understanding of themselves so that they may discover the power, passion, and innate joy that lies within. Often times when we are unknowingly disconnected from our internal experience, we may find that we direct significant judgment inward, which lends to feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and shame. By opening our minds and expanding our view we can unlock the key to self love.

I provide creative, gender-affirming therapy for queer and trans clients, as well as short-term solution focused therapy for partners and family members to process a loved one’s coming out. Clients come to me for a lot of reasons— they’re questioning their gender identity, struggling with the coming out process, or looking to learn more about how to support someone they love. Sometimes they have past traumas that are getting in the way of feeling secure, safe, and authentic. Or they want some strategies for managing anxiety or depression. I have a love of social justice advocacy and consider it an essential part of my role as a mental health therapist. I aim to empower clients to look to their personal experiences as a source of resilience through a humanistic, strength-based approach to counseling while encouraging clients to view mental wellness from a holistic perspective. I have experience in ABA, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), DBT, art therapy, and a variety of other therapies based on need.

I specialize in narrative and internal family systems therapy for those who have experienced marginalized stressors. Depression symptom management, anxiety management, ADHD individualized tool kits, chronic pain, identity work for those within the BIPOC community, and more. My approach is queer, trans (nonbinary and others included) & non-monogamous affirming, including but not limited to sex-positive and harm reduction to all in these communities. With working with marginalized individuals, my goal is always their needs focused. No matter what is happening in life, no matter the stressors.
