I take a compassionate and holistic view towards healing that is informed by Buddhist psychology, social justice, and a belief in our inherent preciousness and inner capacity for healing and wholeness.
If you suffer from having a harsh inner critic or are feeling unsatisfied with life, I can offer a unique perspective to provide a greater sense of freedom. As a man of color and son of immigrants, I work well with clients who are wanting to find their “voice” in life and in relationship, clients going through life transitions such as the “mid-life crisis”, intercultural couples who are having communication issues, and BIPOC individuals who are struggling with ethnic identity and in professional environments.

" My approach incorporates cognitive-behavioral, Gestalt and existential, and Buddhist-based approaches.
Mike Lubofsky, MA, JD, LMFT, Licensed Psychotherapist and Attorney. We are all seeking some sort of reliable refuge. Most of us have internalized the notion that refuge is to be found in external phenomena – other people, places and things. While these external phenomena can be pleasing, reality demonstrates that these phenomena are inherently impermanent and unsatisfactory. In addition, most of us have internalized our likes and dislikes in a way that have given rise to a crystallized belief in the existence of one’s self, the defense and protection of which has come to dictate much of our decision-making through adulthood.

In our lives we are all trying to maximize our happiness and minimize our pain. Our life situation can feel overwhelming, pain can feel constant, and happiness can feel far out of our reach. Unfortunately, sometimes what we thought would make us happy ends up bringing us more pain instead. I offer support and tools to help you re-orient yourself on your path toward cultivating happiness. I use a holistic approach to helping my clients, which may include a combination of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Buddhist-oriented psychology/mindfulness strategies, emotion regulation, and communication skills training.

I also incorporate years of Buddhist practice and eastern philosophy, moving meditation, art, breathwork, spirituality, mindfulness, and DBT tools into work with clients should they feel like any of that is of interest to them.
I am not a typical therapist. I see myself as a co-author, witness, helpful ally, teammate, collaborator and useful resource. Rather than taking a role as an “expert” by making assumptions or interpretations about your life, I love to use skillful conversation and artful question-asking to help you get past obstacles and problems. You are here on this page because you have strength in you, you have desire in you and you have healing in you. You are the main character in your own life. Therapy can either help or hinder the development of this character as someone powerful, capable and whole.

All roads lead to Rome! It doesn't matter where we jump in, if you’re ready, we’ll still get there. My approach is based in Attachment Theory and the idea that much of our conflict and distress stems from old wounds & unmet needs. De-coding this blueprint can provide a path towards healing and fulfillment. Relational issues, trauma, addiction, unleashing the creative spirit, living life “on purpose”, the plight of the pre-teen/teen, are all areas I am passionate about. I incorporate both conventional therapeutic modalities as well as a Buddhist Psychology perspective. I embrace all forms of spirituality as a source of healing.

My approach includes Western psychology, Buddhist compassion-based practices and Somatic traditions.
All of us are confronted with challenges on multiple levels during the difficult times in our lives. Maybe there's a feeling of being stuck, of not living in the flow of your life, difficulty making decisions, not getting restful sleep or feeling misunderstood. You might be having difficulty feeling compassion towards others or yourself. Maybe you are experiencing emotional anguish, grief or loss. During times of challenge we are called upon to live our lives with increased self-awareness and confidence, creativity and optimism.

We learn to survive and cope with our circumstances in the best way we know how at the time. Therapy offers an opportunity to slow down and get to know what is really going on inside and to learn to listen to your body's natural wisdom. I am interested in collaborating with you to explore where you're feeling stuck, confused or overwhelmed. I can help guide you to discover new, more effective ways of showing up for yourself and in your relationships. Additionally, I work with an overarching Buddhist influence in working with emotional and physical awareness, and being present in the here and now.
My belief is everything is interconnected. When we hurt in one area of our lives, often times the other areas hurt with it. As simple as it may sound, sometimes feeling our feelings can be hard work. Truly understanding and being honest with authentic selves can be challenging and sometimes scary. No one should have to do this alone. Together, we can deeply listen and nurture your authentic self to help you heal and grow. We are not just talking together, we are experiencing. To learn more, visit my website at: nakaimatherapy.com

But, don't be scared by my Buddhist background.
I have been working as a counselor and coach since 1992. But probably what makes my approach most unique is my 12 years living in Nepal from 1975-1988 and my deep study of Buddhist psychology. I blend these deep ideas into the work I do in a secular manner. I have recently published The Misleading Mind: How We Create Our Own Problems and How Buddhist Psychology Can Help Us Solve Them. Check it out. the key to happiness is mental health. The key to mental health is a balanced and wise mind so one can, ultimately, become one's own therapist and coach. In these trying times, we need someone who listens very carefully. We need to feel safe and supported. We need to talk to someone who can connect the dots and always give clear and honest feedback. We want to feel validated and empowered. Sometimes we need help fighting our demons whether that comes with anxiety, depression or addiction. For some of us we may need help to understand how to communicate wisely in our relationships or we may need to help dealing with our loneliness, isolation and grief.

Teletherapy
Teletherapy and Online counseling have grown enormously as a medium for therapy since the advent of social distancing. Most therapists are happy to provide sessions by video or phone.

All professionals are licensed to provide video therapy to clients within the State in which they hold their license. Cross State licensing exists, but is rare.

So if you're a client in California, this list of teletherapists are licensed to provide therapy to you online (by phone, video or text based chat) because they are within your state. They are sorted nearest to furthest, with professionals in California listed first.

Teletherapy via phone or video can be very similar to conventional in person sessions. The message is the same, even if the medium is different. There are some advantages in the form of convenience, lack of travel and being in comfort of your own home. Set against those, professionals find it more difficult to read non-verbal signals of their clients, and you may find you yourself can be more easily distracted.
