In our lives we are all trying to maximize our happiness and minimize our pain. Our life situation can feel overwhelming, pain can feel constant, and happiness can feel far out of our reach. Unfortunately, sometimes what we thought would make us happy ends up bringing us more pain instead. I offer support and tools to help you re-orient yourself on your path toward cultivating happiness. I use a holistic approach to helping my clients, which may include a combination of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Buddhist-oriented psychology/mindfulness strategies, emotion regulation, and communication skills training.

" My approach incorporates cognitive-behavioral, Gestalt and existential, and Buddhist-based approaches.
Mike Lubofsky, MA, JD, LMFT, Licensed Psychotherapist and Attorney. We are all seeking some sort of reliable refuge. Most of us have internalized the notion that refuge is to be found in external phenomena – other people, places and things. While these external phenomena can be pleasing, reality demonstrates that these phenomena are inherently impermanent and unsatisfactory. In addition, most of us have internalized our likes and dislikes in a way that have given rise to a crystallized belief in the existence of one’s self, the defense and protection of which has come to dictate much of our decision-making through adulthood.

I also incorporate years of Buddhist practice and eastern philosophy, moving meditation, art, breathwork, spirituality, mindfulness, and DBT tools into work with clients should they feel like any of that is of interest to them.
I am not a typical therapist. I see myself as a co-author, witness, helpful ally, teammate, collaborator and useful resource. Rather than taking a role as an “expert” by making assumptions or interpretations about your life, I love to use skillful conversation and artful question-asking to help you get past obstacles and problems. You are here on this page because you have strength in you, you have desire in you and you have healing in you. You are the main character in your own life. Therapy can either help or hinder the development of this character as someone powerful, capable and whole.

I work with individuals, adolescents, couples and families who desire to live a better life and have connection in their relationships. Did you know that "pain is inevitable, suffering is optional" (Buddhist quote). I didn't. Everyone experiences suffering. Learning how NOT to suffer is life changing. We'll explore the beliefs and meanings that were created during your socialization. You'll learn simple tools. You'll gain awareness about how the process of suffering happens for you and how to NOT suffer. It requires willingness, vulnerability and a commitment to not give up.

But, don't be scared by my Buddhist background.
I have been working as a counselor and coach since 1992. But probably what makes my approach most unique is my 12 years living in Nepal from 1975-1988 and my deep study of Buddhist psychology. I blend these deep ideas into the work I do in a secular manner. I have recently published The Misleading Mind: How We Create Our Own Problems and How Buddhist Psychology Can Help Us Solve Them. Check it out. the key to happiness is mental health. The key to mental health is a balanced and wise mind so one can, ultimately, become one's own therapist and coach. Buddhist psychology is secular, scientific. Nothing to do with religion.

I have been a committed Buddhist practitioner since 2003 and have extensive retreat experience in the major schools of Buddhist meditation as well as education and experience in secular mindfulness practice.
Just as we learn spoken language as children, we learn an unspoken language of relationship. Just as the words we hear become the words we speak, the way we're treated becomes the basis for how we treat others, and how we expect to be treated by the people in our lives. We learn to define ourselves according to the terms by which we were defined, but most of us suspect that there's more to the story. There is.

Do you feel like you encounter more barriers and microaggressions than support when seeking healing for trauma? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, than you may be in the right place. Trauma is when you feel so overloaded that you cannot cope, you may even think you will die or someone you love will die. Teletherapy
Teletherapy and Online counseling have grown enormously as a medium for therapy since the advent of social distancing. Most therapists are happy to provide sessions by video or phone.

All professionals are licensed to provide video therapy to clients within the State in which they hold their license. Cross State licensing exists, but is rare.

So if you're a client in California, this list of teletherapists are licensed to provide therapy to you online (by phone, video or text based chat) because they are within your state. They are sorted nearest to furthest, with professionals in California listed first.

Teletherapy via phone or video can be very similar to conventional in person sessions. The message is the same, even if the medium is different. There are some advantages in the form of convenience, lack of travel and being in comfort of your own home. Set against those, professionals find it more difficult to read non-verbal signals of their clients, and you may find you yourself can be more easily distracted.
