For we are all too familiar with the "Angry Black Woman" and equally as toxic, "Strong Black Woman" tropes. These archetypes are incessantly perpetuated in the media and impact our relationship with vulnerability; thus, the capacity to be fully realized humans. Furthermore, Therapy for Black Women helps to mitigate the continued exploitation of Black women in search of licensed clinicians who have practical knowledge surrounding what it is to be a Black Women.

I have been in practice as a psychotherapist for over 7 years. My Master’s in Social Work focused on Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality and how our different life experiences shape and influence how we navigate our surroundings. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous Person of Color) & LGBTQIA, and a veteran of the United States Armed Forces, some of my approaches in helping my clients identify their challenges and barriers to their identified problems start from a person-centered approach by discovering who they are and what they need and want in life.

Sometimes we get to places in life where we get stuck. Maybe it’s an issue at the job or at home. Perhaps you’ve been dealing with feelings of depression, anxiety, or overwhelming anger. It is my goal to help you sort out how to deal with your challenges and support you develop into a better you. I also know that I am an African American cisgender male, and I want to use my presence in the therapy field to help increase the comfort level for males and minorities to receive clinical services.

Dr. Griffin is an award-winning Professor of Psychology in the Department of Critical Theory and Social Justice at Occidental College in Los Angeles where he teaches Poststructural and Postcolonial theory and conducts a clinical practice. Jerell is a California State Board of Behavioral Sciences Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist at Peace & Mind Wellness. He obtained his M.A. in Clinical Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University and a B.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies from Houston Christian University. Jerell has a little over 10 years of experience serving individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, Black, Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) in high-risk communities, youth and adolescents, and couples interested in strengthening the foundation of their relationship.

I view therapy as a safe space where clients can feel empowered to share their stories as they experience them. My primary goal as a clinician is not to “fix” you, my goal is to support you on your internal journey as you cultivate the skills necessary to grow and heal in a conducive manner. My function as a clinician is to help clients navigate and dissect their stories as a way to help them understand the meaning behind their experiences. I always encourage my clients to come to therapy as they are and we will begin the therapeutic process from there. I DO NOT work with MINORS, COUPLES, and FAMILIES.

While superbly educated and experienced as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I always remember that the primary component of any healing I can facilitate is spiritual. I have a background as a creative artist and a community-oriented clinician. I work with children 6 and up, couples, families and individuals regardless of sexual orientation, race, religion, or economic status.
