My practice focuses on the unique needs of children 4+ through young adulthood and their families. I create developmentally appropriate, customized treatment plans using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) strategies, art and play therapy interventions.

Before opening a private practice in San Anselmo, I worked as a primary therapist with the Child Therapy Institute of Marin working with children and adults. I have also worked as a school counselor in Marin elementary, middle and high schools; and at a local university. I have clinical experience working in an eating recovery center helping clients and their families recover from eating disorders. I received a bachelor’s in arts from Scripps College in Claremont, California and a master’s in counseling psychology from Dominican University in San Rafael, California. I am a doctoral candidate in Clinical Psychology.

I help my clients find the courage necessary to face and value what has not yet been acknowledged in their life, and to find the potential strengths that have not yet been harnessed. I specialize in helping adults, teens, romantic partners, and families heal from hurt, trauma and shame in order to become better connected to themselves and one another. The majority of my practice focuses on healing emotional wounds, anxiety, and improving your relationships (including experiences of divorce and blended families). I work collaboratively with you to set goals for therapy that are curated to your individual preferences and needs, and I often draw from Attachment Theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and somatic awareness.

I specialize in working with individuals with social learning deficits. During intake calls, many parents report their child to have some (or all) of the following traits: Very bright (above average IQ), better with adults and younger children than with peers, interrupts, trouble with balanced conversation (tends to monologue or doesn't contribute), struggles with losing, challenges with emotional regulation and impulse control, inflexible, strong language abilities, difficulty with perspective taking, wants to engage with others but often gets stuck, trouble with problem-solving, and/or executive function challenges.

My name is Dr. R. Austin Heafey - I am a licensed clinical psychologist who works with children, adolescents, parents and families. Suffering from anxiety, depression, or substance abuse often means unhealthy thought patterns/actions are reinforcing cognitive distortions and destructive behaviors. Anxiety leads to avoidance of situations that potentiate more anxiety, yet fears of triggering stimuli remain active. Depression is constituted by biases towards negative thoughts, and without challenging unfounded beliefs about one's worth or abilities, depression persists. Those abusing alcohol or other drugs cannot participate in life unaided by the numbing effect substances generate. These individuals are stuck, not broken. If motivated, they may all recover.
