As a Black Women, we often identify with the feeling of failing when in reality, we are dealing with stress, anxiety, depression and so much more. Many people may look at the Black Woman and automatically place her at the bottom of the totem pole and I say that is because we as Black Women are the foundation of so much. We carry so much on our shoulders while being told to be strong and pray on it.

Malakeia Scott -Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with 8 + years of experience in social work. A graduate of Clark Atlanta University with a Masters degree in Social Work. Her career began with counseling adolescents and teens with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. She has worked as a hospice social worker providing clients and their families with emotional support, resources and navigating end-of-life care. She has also served as a Therapeutic Support Specialist with the Division of Children and Family State Office Unit, serving youth in the child welfare system, and clients adjusting to life on dialysis.

I believe therapy helps us understand the power of the mind. This is especially useful when we feel disconnected, marginalized, or stigmatized. When we feel this way, learning how the mind channels this information through thoughts, feelings, emotions, and perceptions, can influence us to recognize our own cognitive processes and how they impact our life. If we attend to our cognitive processes in a healthy way, it may lead to regulation of mood, clarity, balance and feelings of peace. We start to evolve and accept certain things about ourselves. I see the assessment process as therapeutic in nature. I believe that everyone is an author of their own story. And as with any story, the main character experiences challenges they are working to overcome. I believe that we as people experience language in a way that has created the challenges we experience as main characters, and we find difficulty in writing our story past these challenges. I work together with my clients to explore their story and assist how they want to change using their existing skills and introducing others as we take a journey to reach the goals they want.
