Approximately 90% of my clients identify as transgender or non-binary.
I strive to be the most effective therapist I can be for my clients. For me, being effective means helping clients succeed in learning new skills, developing upon skills they already have, and reaching their goals. In other words, helping my clients get to a place where they don’t need my services anymore. Compassion for others and wanting to help people is what started me on the path to becoming a therapist, but seeing my clients grow stronger and succeed is what makes me want to come to work every day.

Problems enter our lives and we do the best we can to manage and cope. Sometimes, it is useful to have someone to help navigate these struggles. That is how I view my role. It is important to me to provide a space where clients receive unconditional positive regard and where we work together as a collaborative team. I practice evidenced based psychotherapy which is effective in relieving a variety of problems. My two main areas of focus are gender health as well as treating OCD/Phobias and related disorders. I work to incorporate techniques that make sense to the client and are effective in bringing relief.

I write letters of support for transgender people.
All humans have inherent worth, yet I believe a lack of self-worth is at the core of all emotional pain. I use a narrative approach to allow clients to share their story as they see it and then help them reframe to build a life that better meets their desired goals. Self-defeating behaviors created to cope with difficult situations, such as trauma, gender identity and a lack of validation, can be changed when identified and understood. I join my client on their journey to become the person they desire. I am a member of World Professional Association of Health and of International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation.

When working with transgender people I adhere to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards of care.
We all suffer, there is nothing wrong with you. Counseling is a collaborative process that we, you and I, use to actively construct a way of living. Sometimes our conversations will reveal previously unseen solutions. Anything that I propose is yours to question, modify, elaborate, or reject. You are a unique person who knows what has worked and what has not worked in the past. Life is an ongoing practice, made more meaningful and less confusing when engaged in authentic dialogue with others. Maybe, through shared inquiry, we can discover new possibilities. I would be honored to visit with you and find our way together.

I am a mental health therapist licensed in the states of Washington and Oklahoma.
Trauma and discrimination deeply impact the lives of survivors. At times it can feel as though these struggles will not ease, or that they require a high energy investment. When you feel that you have the space to engage, therapy can be a process that brings about healing and growth to improve your mental, physical, and social health.

Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.
What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.
How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
