Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists in Pittsburg County, OK
Much of my clinical experience has been working with individuals and families impacted by challenging life events, whether it be a one-time problematic experience or generational. Sometimes there isn't an identified traumatic event or 'reason' one might be experiencing unwanted emotions and or behaviors. Many folks are simply seeking a therapist that will collaboratively work with them to improve overall well-being while learning to recognize and further develop their strengths. I help clients understand why they do what they do, while learning and improving skills, healthy reasoning, and adaptability.

You’re the one who “has it together”… until you don’t. You’re overwhelmed, overthinking everything, people-pleasing, or stuck in the same frustrating relationship patterns and wondering why this keeps happening. You’re ready to understand yourself on a deeper level — and finally create change that lasts. I am happy you are here!

Life is full of questions and unknowns: “When will I get married?”, “Will I get that promotion?”, “Why do I feel so alone?”, “What is my purpose in life?” No matter what unknowns are thrown our way, we each have developed skills to deal with that worry. We acquire these skills over time, through our experiences and upbringing. Some are healthy ways of coping, some are not. Understanding the lens through which we perceive our experiences and the world around us can tell us a lot about how prepared we are to handle life's unknowns.

Are you tired of constantly feeling on edge? This is not your fault. You are not broken. Your body is trying to heal itself by processing the stressful/traumatic situations you have been through. Your nervous system is getting flooded (unintended overwhelm) while your body is trying to process the situations you have been through. Because the nervous system is flooded, your brain is unable to file the memories as things that happened in the past. This is where I come in. I help you navigate these memories in ways that do not overwhelm your nervous system so that you are able to file the memories as things that happened in the past.

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists
How does cognitive processing therapy work?
A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.
What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.
How long does cognitive processing therapy last?
CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.
How effective is cognitive processing therapy?
A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
