For information on play therapy, marriage and family therapy, parenting and general mental health information, go to my Facebook page.
My personal philosophy regarding therapy is to focus on the family unit and meet each individual member of the family where they are and treat them as an important part of the therapy. Parents often call me and state they need help for their child and my first response is to treat the child but consider the whole family unit as a part of the therapy treatment plan. Meeting the individual needs of the client is of the utmost importance.

I especially enjoy working with adults that are looking to heal their past traumas to become a better partner, better parent , or better version of themselves.
Accepting new clients JAN-FEB 2023 At my core, I believe that play is an essential part of a human interaction. This is because I wholeheartedly believe that play should not end at a certain age, or when a child is “too old”. From a young age, play is how we learn boundaries and social skills. Play can also be used to process trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, and much more. Play therapy can help build trust and attachment with your child, while the both of you learn more helpful behaviors and how to express your emotions. I encourage a child’s caregivers to take an active role in the therapeutic process.

Parenting is the most important job there is but where do we get training? Most of our training is OJT or from our parents but what if our training isn't "good enough?" Have you ever struggled with parenting and wished that you had a safe place to recharge, regroup, and express your frustrations? As a parent I can relate and as a Therapist I am here to help you. Being a kid is difficult. It's frustrating to communicate when your brain doesn't have the words to express what you want to say. Parents use words to communicate but children communicate through play.

Have you been in therapy for as long as you can remember and still have no idea who you can trust, how to regulate your emotions, or how to make and keep friends? Possibly struggle with self-harm and/or suicidal ideation? Do you feel like the world just doesn't understand you because your feelings are so very BIG. Maybe you don't know how to turn off the scary thoughts in your mind. Or you might be struggling with invisible illnesses and exhausted. Are you a caregiver navigating complex family dynamics and behaviors? Or a parent feeling distressed, having difficulty bonding, or suffering loss? If so, you are my people.

I also have experience in developing communication and parenting skills with families.
Asking for help is one of the hardest things to do. It can make you feel defeated and vulnerable, however, it is the first step to overcome the obstacles in your life. After overcoming this step, the last thing you want to do is to tell a stranger your most inner thoughts. I will provide an environment that encourages trust, open communication, and understanding. I believe it is important to collaborate with my clients as each client is the expert of their own lives. It is my personal goal to empower and develop the skills my client needs to address any issues that are prohibiting them from living the life that they want to live.

No one comes to a therapist because they need a lecture. You're here because you need a partner on your personal journey to healing. Good therapy is an invitation into a dialogue, not a monologue where someone "thera-splains" yourself to you. It's my passion to help my clients with self-esteem, depression, anxiety, parenting and learning to find enjoyment in daily life. I use trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches to support my clients and am LGBTQ affirming. My areas of expertise include life transitions, depression/anxiety and positive parenting coaching (including how to support your LGBTQ child).

Now accepting new clients! Society likes to pretend that parenting is always rewarding and that attachment happens without effort. But as parents, we know how hard it can be. Being a child isn't easy either, and young children won't tell us they are struggling. They will show us with behaviors, with disturbances in eating, sleeping, and toileting, and within their relationships with others. I work with children 0-10 and their caregivers to resolve trauma, attachment issues, mood disorders, and behavior issues. I also enjoy helping adults with attachment, adjustment issues, post-partum, or parenting stress.

My areas of interest and experience are working with issues related to: Depression, anxiety, history of physical or sexual abuse, mood disorders, eating disorders, self-esteem, relationship conflict, family conflict, college/career transition, personality disorders, parenting concerns, post partum depression, drug or alcohol abuse, and grief.
At some point, we often find ourselves struggling to get past a problem, whether that problem is with an important relationship, or an inner emotional struggle. I enjoy working with others to understand how one came to be in such conflict and how one can move from old ways of coping to newer healthier ways. I believe working from a relational perspective is an important way to create an atmosphere of trust. I strive to help my patients better understand their thoughts, feelings, and actions. The more we know about ourselves the more freedom we have to make better choices in work, play, and relationships.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
