Sexual Abuse Therapists in Ohio
If you’re a person lying awake at night wondering why your brain feels hi-jacked and "does everyone feel this way", this might be for you. Many of the clients who reach out to me say some version of the same thing, “I've done therapy before, but it didn't work. My mind feels foggy. My past was hard, but that was years ago. Shouldn't I be over this now?” You might be putting intense pressure on yourself. You may have tears that feel out of control, panic during unexpected changes, social stress that feels all consuming, or threats to emotional and physical safety where ever you look.

I work with adults carrying sexual abuse, complex trauma, and relationship or intimacy wounds.
Do you feel like your past is always causing you to fail in the present? Do you carry trauma, sexual wounds, or deep shame that won’t stay “in the past,” no matter how hard you try to move on? Maybe you’re exhausted from pretending you’re fine, showing up for everyone else while feeling empty, anxious, or broken inside. You might wonder if God is disappointed in you, or if healing is even possible after what you’ve lived through. Ignoring these hurts can keep you stuck in cycles of self-blame, numbing, and relationships that don’t feel safe or connected.

You've lived through something terrible that most people do not understand. There is a daily battle inside your head. You constantly fight back memories of what you've experienced. You wake up in a cold sweat with your heart racing. You pick up extra shifts at work, and your phone is a welcome distraction from your thoughts. You grapple with why this has happened to you. When you're at a game or the store, you're exhausted from scanning the crowd. You desperately want to move on and feel some relief, but the harder you try to forget it, the worse you feel. These are normal reactions to a horribly abnormal situation.

Therapy offers a supportive, nonjudgmental space for healing, growth, and self-discovery. I take a relational, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive approach because trust and connection are key to meaningful change. As a certified EMDR therapist trained in the Flash technique, I often integrate mindfulness and awareness of how the body responds to stress. My background spans victim advocacy, community mental health, and college counseling, with extensive experience helping trauma survivors, first responders, and those managing anxiety, depression, or grief.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
