I work with individuals who may be struggling with depression and trauma related to past relationships be it family or significant other relationships.
As a counselor, and more specifically a counselor with over three decades of experience, and my aim is simply to help people. My MSW (Master of Social Work) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Additionally, I obtain my Independent License in Social Work, and I can supervise other licensed social workers (LISW-S). I serve to help all people reach their goals in healthy ways. Counseling is not just something I do for an income, it is who I am, for I have a "spirit of counsel" that directs what I do inside & outside the counseling setting. I didn't really choose to be a counselor; it is more like I was called to counsel.

Hi, I am Heather. I believe, that you were not created to live in trauma, anxiety, depression, anger, rejection, regret, guilt, shame, false hope and broken promises. You were designed for a purpose, to not just get through life, but to thrive in it! If you find yourself stuck, in a cycle of wanting to change, but not knowing how. I'm your gal. My goal is to give you space and encouragement to address your healing so that your places of brokenness can find hope. We can work together to take back your life, so you can do more than just get through each moment and day. You were made for more!

Are you looking to go beyond the surface and deep dive to discover the root of your suffering and struggles that you are facing? Are you needing to integrate pieces of your life story and make sense of something that has left you disjointed, disillusioned or trapped? Perhaps you are ready or feeling a need to create space to unfold some of the painful material that keeps you in perpetuating cycles or patterns that have been difficult to manage and break.

I work with people on relationships, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, anger, career issues, sexuality, addiction, spirituality, and more.
I do individual and couple therapy. I am often a good fit for clients who want to integrate a spiritual perspective into therapy. By spiritual I mean living authentically, finding deep purpose, forgiving oneself and others, having compassion for yourself and others in the face of life's inevitable challenges, and seeing the sacred in the ordinary. I work with people of different faiths and those with no particular belief. I mix creativity, humor, and metaphors into therapy and encourage "daily practice for the rest of your life" to keep growth going long after therapy concludes. Check out some videos about my approach on my website.

I work with people who struggle with different life challenges including but not limited to, depression, anxiety, life transitions, loss and bereavement, trauma and relationship difficulties.
Accepting New Clients with Weekend Availability! We all just want to feel comfortable in our own skin. We want to live our lives feeling inspired, happy, and purposeful. Somewhere along the way we may have sought out external things to achieve this goal - drugs, alcohol, relationships, jobs, social circles, money, status, etc. These things work for a little while…until they don’t. We finally get to a place where we realize we need help turning inward. We become willing to examine our trauma and core wounds and heal from what is in the way of us emerging into our fullest selves. This is where transformation begins.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
