Many people come to therapy feeling unseen, unheard, or unworthy. Creating a space where you feel genuinely understood, respected, and accepted is central to my work. I strive to provide a safe, nonjudgmental environment where we can navigate life's challenges together & explore difficult emotions with curiosity, compassion, and honesty. Originally from Australia, I bring both professional and personal experiences that have deepened my appreciation for the many ways people navigate adversity, identity, belonging, and change. Living with an invisible illness, I know some of life's most significant struggles aren't visible to others.

I most often work with an individual adult or teen who wants healing and growth: healing from trauma and pain, growth in relationships with others and within self. Most clients have a desire for more connection, truthfulness about themselves and their world, peace, and spiritual life. I also enjoy working with couples and families toward better communication and relational health.

Life isn't easy. It often brings challenging situations, and with them, difficult emotions such as anger, fear, worry, grief, and sadness. We all, as human beings, have problems and pain. Not always in the same flavor, or intensity, but in some degree or another, we all face difficulty. It is normal to want to turn away from pain, problems, and suffering, however, if we are to heal and become healthier individuals, we must face our struggles and our difficult emotions. The only way out is through.

My approach to counseling is pragmatic (which I've been called more than once). Pragmatic means "dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations" & "the study of how context contributes to meaning." As we collaborate to reach your goals, we will approach things sensibly and realistically, seeking understanding, clarity, & truth. We will explore language and context to gain insight, guide decision making, and heal old wounds. We will work as partners to identify growth areas, resolve issues, set goals, & affect change. We'll also have fun!

Because of life's ever-present stresses and uncertainties, all of us must face a variety of changes and adjustments as we move through life. Sometimes this can result in personal difficulties that cannot be resolved alone. Intervention may be needed to help find solutions and avoid future problems. I am a clinical psychologist trained to address many developmental and life-adjustment issues for a broad spectrum of individuals from early childhood through adolescence, adulthood and later life. My training is designed to help individuals resolve their emotional/social conflicts, and cope more successfully with the demands of the world.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
