My style of counseling has a strong emphasis on spirituality.
Whether you want to feel better, sleep better, think and focus better, communicate better, have a better connection with people, it all comes down to living a better life. I help people to achieve any goal, whether it's using hypnosis to kick a bad habit, such as smoking or overeating; or changing negative beliefs, such as not being good enough; or tending to grief and loss by obtaining closure, insight or a deeper understanding of why something ended the way it did, or learning meditation and mindfulness to assist with reaching their full potential. I create a customized approach that suits each client's individual preferences.

Ruins are not empty. They are sacred places full of presence (John O'Donahue: Anam Cara). Uncovering a deeper understanding of ourselves most often comes from experiencing unexpected changes such as divorce, the loss of a loved one, mental and physical health changes and even embarking on a new career. Changes can throw us into chaos. Let's discover your presence, your power of growth, and your peace within. Let's talk about our options.

Have you reached a point in your life where continuing down the same path seems impossible but you aren’t sure which direction you want to go? Or perhaps you know the direction you would like to move in but just aren’t quite sure how to get there? Maybe you get confused or overwhelmed by your emotions. You find yourself withdrawing, panicking, drinking, or using other coping strategies that served you in the past but no longer provide the relief you seek. These are common reasons clients choose to engage in therapy with me.

I practice counseling from a humanistic perspective, valuing people's intrinsic potential to move toward growth and healing. I collaborate with clients, providing the space and opportunity to explore the nature of their relationship with self and their relationship with others. I seek balance in my work. I respect that my work with clients often needs to shift fluidly between different approaches: practical concerns such as skills-building and decision-making, internal explorations of experience, and existential concerns regarding discovering or creating meaning and purpose.

I specialize in helping survivors of trauma find their voice and heal. My clients have had to process overwhelming experiences alone for most of their lives, and I am honored to help hold their painful experiences with attunement and care. If you are struggling with issues related to anxiety, depression, trauma/ptsd, or major life changes, you don't have to hold it alone anymore. I especially love working with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. I find it an honor to witness your resilience and guide you as you reconnect with all of the parts of yourself you’ve had to push away.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
