Accepting New Clients! You want your life to be different, make big changes, take risks, but there’s something that’s holding you back. You’ve tried everything, and maybe it provides short-term relief, but here’s the problem: it’s still there. You can see that life and those around you continue to move forward. All the while you feel stuck and bracing for what is around the corner. But what if it was possible to live without fear of the future or the weight of the past? To live life embracing the full extent of human emotion—grief, pain, fear—but also joy, hope, and love. To become the hero of your own story.

I believe sometimes we get to a place where we feel stuck, frustrated, or hopeless and need someone to support and assist us without judgment. My purpose is to provide a safe, compassionate space in which you can safely explore and fully understand your current struggles, gain insight and self-awareness, and help build a strong foundation in order to move toward a more balanced, healthy, and peaceful life. There are many parts that make up the whole you, which I believe we can begin to explore and develop together.

Our lives can get extraordinarily challenging and burdensome at times, and we may struggle to cope with the things that are being thrown our way. That can lead to various difficulties and affect our ability to enjoy our lives. As a counselor, I try to demystify the counseling process; in that counseling is a process of self-exploration and at times that can be extremely hard as we discuss issues or concerns you find difficulty talking about. But, with time as we work together, my goal is to support you in your process toward healing and growth.

Someone close to you died. Your world turned upside down. You feel alone and “crazy,” and you just want to “get over it.” You feel like you’re doing this grief thing wrong. You just want normal back. The loss has made you question many things about yourself and your life. No one else seems to understand what you’re going through. The truth is, grief is a natural, normal response to loss. You don’t have to be alone nor are you “crazy.” Grief is a unique journey for each person. There is no right or wrong way to do it.

I am often a good fit for clients who want to integrate a spiritual perspective into counseling. By "spiritual" I mean living authentically, finding deep purpose, forgiving oneself and others, seeing the sacred in the ordinary, and having a daily spiritual practice that keeps growth going long after therapy concludes. With individuals and couples I am known for using creative images, humor, and timeless wisdom to support your growth. Each course of therapy is as unique as the individual or couple seeking help. I'll get to know you and together we'll create an an alliance that supports your goals for personal and spiritual growth.

My therapy style is empathetic, insightful, reflective, humorous and goal-affirming. I have always had a "quirky" sense of humor and I love that I can bring that into session with me. Sometimes being able to laugh or to see the absurdity of life shakes loose the obstacles and anxiety. My initial goal is to connect with you and your experiences in your world, ask questions, provide feedback, and use interventions to rebuild and reinforce your sense of self and your place in the universe.

As the result of my work with a wide array of individuals with a variety of presenting mental health needs, I believe true healing must be viewed from an all-encompassing therapeutic approach that considers the whole person. This includes aspects such as their identity/sense of self, upbringing, traumas, interpersonal relationships, personality, as well as their presenting environmental circumstances. Therapeutic goals include helping suffering persons to find meaning/purpose in their lives, develop more effective ways of communicating/connecting with others, and to critically evaluate their beliefs, values, and choices.

So many times we are held back from being the full and true version of ourselves because of negative thought patterns and misguided feelings that we have about ourselves and the world around us. Becoming a healthy and fulfilled version of ourselves free from societal expectations can be scary. What if I lose people? What if I am wrong about what I want? What if my family won't accept me? What if I fail? What if I can't do it? I am seeing clients of all ages and walks of life to help them become the people that they want to be. I want to provide a space where everyone feels safe to be 100% themselves.

I strive to take a holistic approach to client mental health and see therapy as a collaborative process. Together, we evaluate how current emotions may have roots in past or current events as well as identify strategies and coping mechanisms to help alleviate negative feelings. My hope for clients is to cultivate a sense of personal awareness that leads to empowerment and resilience. We all have challenges when navigating through life, knowing what choices you have as well as when you need extra support is part of the journey. I am here to lend the extra support to help clients get back on their path.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
