You pull into the driveway after another flawless day. You're the one everyone leaned on, the designated fixer at work and at home, the person who handled the crisis before anyone else noticed it was a crisis. Then you cut the engine, and the exhaustion hits you like a physical weight. Chest tight. Mind racing. Everyone thinks you have it all together, and you've gotten very good at proving them right. But you're running on pure adrenaline now, masking the anxiety of a past you never actually dealt with. You can't keep living in survival mode much longer, and some quiet part of you already knows it.

Many of us go through life feeling like we aren’t equipped to deal with what we’ve been given. Anxiety, depression, stress, grief, relationship problems, substance abuse–just to name a few–are all issues that can affect our emotional health. I have been able to work with many individuals from all walks of life who have faced some of these same problems. If you can relate, I hope you take comfort in knowing that you do not have to face these things alone.

As a parent it can be so frustrating to feel lost when it comes to handling your child’s emotional outbursts or difficulty staying focused throughout the day. When these behaviors occur frequently in a child’s life, whether due to ADHD, anxieties, or difficulty handling big emotions, children can begin to feel like something is wrong with them, that they can never do anything right. Maybe your teen is struggling with worry or anxiety, feeling exhausted by the pressure of school or perhaps a history of trauma. Seeing their pain causes parents to feel weighed down by guilt.

Though cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapies are bread and butter techniques, I put my own geeky, pop-culture laden spin on things.
My ideal clients are people who have often felt a little different - highly sensitive, neurodivergent, creative, or simply out of step with the expectations around them. Many come to therapy struggling with anxiety, burnout, identity questions, or the sense that they never quite fit. I help clients understand how their minds work, develop practical coping skills, and build lives that feel authentic rather than forced. When helpful, we may draw on stories, fandoms, or personal interests as ways to explore identity and growth.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
