Anger Management Therapists in Johnstown, OH
You might feel like your emotions are a lot; they come on fast, feel intense, and are hard to shut off once they start. Some days you may feel overwhelmed, shut down, irritable, or on edge, while other times you might feel numb or disconnected. You may struggle with anxiety, depression, urges to self-harm, or using substances to cope with stress or escape how you’re feeling. Maybe you’ve been told to “just calm down” or “think positive,” but that hasn’t helped. You don’t want long lectures or therapy that feels awkward or pointless; you want real tools that actually help you get through the day.

My professional history consists of 14 years in addiction counseling and an additional 3 years of mental health/relationship counseling. I believe the individual is comprised of four domains: Biological, Psychological, Social and Spiritual. In our search for purpose and meaning all of these domains must be addressed. I embrace a holistic approach to counseling which views the counselor as a trained professional- but not all knowing expert. While the client has problems; the client also has solutions. Through a therapeutic alliance, together we can develop a plan that will lead to a more fulfilling life.

Some individuals seek assistance with acute stressful situations, others with life transitions, and still others with ongoing mental health issues. Without exception, every individual is treated with dignity and offered the highest level of treatment available. Being in a small city sometimes requires collaboration with other providers such as primary care physicians or clinics for medication management, school districts for continuity of care, or nursing homes for consultation. My office has successfully maintained these type relationships for 25 years.

Whether you’re dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, substance use concerns, difficulty managing anger, stress, overthinking, low confidence, or several of these at once, you don’t have to keep carrying the burden alone.
I’ve worked with thousands of clients who felt stuck in self-defeating beliefs, guilt, shame, or old patterns that drained the joy out of life. What I’ve learned is simple: when people reconnect with hope, purpose, and strengths they may have forgotten they possess, they often begin seeing themselves and their circumstances differently.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
