I specialize in the treatment of trauma-related mental health symptoms and clinical presentations such as difficulty with emotional regulation (severe anxiety, difficulty controlling anger, hopelessness/despair), interpersonal problems and high conflict relationships, or problems with job/relationship/parenting/social functions.
Engaging in the process of psychotherapy invites you to become more self-aware. This heightened awareness can inspire and encourage you to seek changes in your relationship with yourself and others. I join in collaboration with my clients to better understand past and present experiences and how they currently affect life options, choices, and decisions. As a therapist, I draw upon clients’ emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual resilience to support healing and engagement in life.

Thanks for visiting this profile - indeed there are quite a few therapists to sift through when trying to find a good match! I've been a practicing therapist since 2009, and I enjoy counseling adolescents, adults, families and couples. I find that most people are searching for a therapist because they want to be happier. Perhaps this manifests through symptoms of worry or sadness, broken relationships, or simply feeling stuck or struggling to overcome something. Most of us want to be happier or for things in life to be better, and I feel honored to help my clients strive to achieve this. I truly believe it is possible.

I work with both Individuals and Couples as they seek greater fulfillment in their lives and relationships. Individual therapy with me will feel like you’re telling your story. By providing a safe, nonjudgmental, and collaborative space you’ll be able to approach the difficulties you have had and are currently facing. By engaging your story in this space, you’ll be able to understand yourself and the world around you in a new way that will lead to healing and growth. My approach with couples is similar in that I hope to help you engage each other in new ways, fostering fulfilling patterns of connection and attachment.

I also frequently help clients looking for useful strategies to manage intense emotions such as anxiety, panic, sadness, anger, or shame.
My years of experience in different settings (outpatient, inpatient, and residential) allow me to successfully work with and help those struggling with complicated, overwhelming, and life-impairing symptoms, including severe depression, panic/anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. Depending on the concern, many clients meet their goals for treatment in around 4-5 months.

I have experience working with clients struggling with depression, anxiety, anger issues, marital issues, ADD/ADHD, ODD, stress management, alcohol and substance abuse, men's issues, and family issues.
Hello! My name is Doug Shotsky and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Ohio and Michigan. I am experienced and competent in many different therapeutic approaches and don't believe that any approach is a one-size-fits-all all. I also utilize a holistic approach including the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects from a biblical perspective. My initial approach is to build a good working relationship with each client in order to create an atmosphere where clients feel comfortable being transparent. This is key to identifying specific issues, treatment approaches, and a plan of action for each client individually.

Life stressors are conceptualized as either external factors which can be decreased by taking some action or internal factors for which the stress comes from inside the person. As a therapist, I help guide clients through the thought-change process of changing unhelpful thoughts to more helpful and empowering ones. I possess a master’s degree in education and social work from Cleveland State University and have an Independent Social Work License with Supervisor Credentials as well as a license in School Counseling.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
