"What do you do for a living?" is a common question in our society. So common that oftentimes people begin to believe their occupation defines who they are. If that facet of their identity goes missing for any reason (injury, job loss, trauma), people often feel lost or confused about who they truly are. I believe that therapeutic support and counseling can help people rediscover their purpose while challenging their thoughts of what they are truly capable of.

Finding the right therapist isn't a one-size-fits-all process. It is important to find someone who you feel connected with. For that reason I do not charge for the first session if, for any reason, you decide not to schedule a second session. (Only after a second session will I charge for both the first and second sessions.) The goal is to make this process as stress-free as possible for you. I work with a variety of client issues, but specialize heavily in coping with symptoms of anxiety, burnout, relationship issues, and depression. You are likely used to performing at a high level but lately things have felt much heavier.

Hi, I’m Dr. Steve Graef — a psychologist and performance consultant who works with leaders, professionals, and athletes navigating demanding roles and high expectations. Over the years I noticed something important: performance challenges are rarely just about motivation or mindset. More often they come from the conditions surrounding a person’s work and life — pressure, environment, habits, relationships, or unclear direction. My work focuses on helping people design those conditions more intentionally so performance can emerge naturally. I call this approach Performance Design.

My specialty areas include sports performance, life transitions, and anxiety.
You push hard. You set goals and hit them. And somewhere along the way, you stopped asking whether any of it actually feels good. Maybe a big life change has left you wondering who you are outside of your achievements. Or maybe you just know you're capable of more, but can't figure out what's standing in your way. I work with high achievers, athletes, coaches, and people who are used to being the one who has it all together, until they're not. Together, we dig into what could be driving the burnout, the perfectionism, or the anxiety underneath the surface, and use that to find your path and embrace the climb.

The mental side of sports can feel isolating and overwhelming.
I provide telehealth services across Ohio and California. You’re an athlete—youth, collegiate, or elite—balancing the intense pressure to perform with the emotional toll it takes on your wellbeing. You might struggle with anxiety, burnout, injury recovery, or feeling uncertain about your identity beyond sport. Maybe you’re navigating transitions—stepping up to higher competition or planning life after the game. Your goal is to rebuild confidence, sharpen mental focus, and find true balance. You want to feel mentally strong and emotionally clear so you can thrive both within the sport and in life beyond it.

Sports Performance Therapists
How does sports psychology work?
Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualization, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.

How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?
The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.

How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?
Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.

What are the limitations of sports psychology?
Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
