Hello, my name is Jessica Pechan. I became interested in social work while in school doing volunteer work in Mexico. That started my love for the country of Mexico as well as my passion for traveling with people when they are going through a hard period of their lives. My career thus far has included school-based mental health as well as community mental health in various organizations. This has allowed me to work with people as young as 4 years old through adulthood.

I find when possible the inclusion of family and significant others assists individuals in growth and recovery.
I have been in the counseling profession for over 30 years. I still look forward to meeting new people who desire to change and have the courage to share their personal life with me. I believe the times we live in offer so much to so many, yet so many struggles with finding satisfaction, meaning and a sense of belonging in the world. I view the counseling process as one of collaboration with the counselor and client to identify the client’s strengths and issues to work on. I believe therapeutic relationship is the primary tool in facilitating personal growth.

I practice the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of therapy which is based on an understanding of our protective behaviors as being beneficial, with a goal to keep us safe.
I work with adults experiencing difficulties with a variety of behaviors that are holding them back from the lives they seek. These include protective behaviors like anger, anxiety, depression; numbing behaviors (alcohol or substance abuse.); distractions (goal-fixation, promiscuity, exercise, and others), and more. I work to help bring clarity and build safe connections within families, relationships at work, and elsewhere. I work to guide safe processing of grief, loss and loneliness. Together, we focus on you and your needs for emotional health.

You may be feeling lonely, overwhelmed, or scared for yourself, your marriage, or your family . It may seem like your life is falling apart or you or your loved ones are constantly walking on egg shells. Its getting more difficult to keep it together for appearances or maybe its already past that point. You've tried just about everything you can think of to make your situation better but nothing has worked and things are getting worse. You may be hanging on by a thread, but you are not ready to give up hope.

I am currently taking new telehealth clients for sex therapy, couples therapy and trauma therapy. My ideal client wants to heal. Coming out of a global pandemic, with relationships and sex lives suffering, we all need to be intentional about rebuilding emotional, mental and sexual health. Whether you’re trying to heal from trauma, improve communication and intimacy in your relationship(s), explore polyamory or consensual non monogamy, or explore sexual and/or gender identity, I believe I can help you to achieve your personal goals.

Been everywhere, tried everything and worked with everyone specializing in the treatment of disordered eating and you are still not better? My approach is different. When diets don't work, residential treatment has failed and your family members are frustrated with you as if it were somehow your fault, you need a different approach. I look at the problem from a bio-psycho-social perspective. In other words, I look at the role that food plays, the family dynamic and the social pressures. Because of my success rate with extremely difficult cases, I'm considered the go-to therapist by local professionals. Welcome home!

Trauma, which means "wound" often, but not always, starts with our family of origin.
As stated above, due to the current Covid 19 pandemic, I am providing counseling sessions through a secure online platform or through phone calls. I have been happy to realize that my veteran and new clients are all satisfied with this protocol and do not feel that they are "missing" anything by not being in my office. Good, healing therapy begins with the trusting relationship between the therapist and the client; that can be built through several types of communication styles. When this emergency is over, you will have the freedom to decide if you wish to continue online or have sessions in my Mason or Forest Park offices.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
