We specialize in working with
Black
women & teen girls, though all are welcome.
"My mission in life is not to merely survive, but to thrive and do so with some passion, compassion, some humor, and some style." -Maya Angelou As
black
women we are usually the last on our list- the order is usually kids, partners, parents, family, jobs, friends... then you. All of this and we're barely making it. Why continue to struggle and merely survive, when you can thrive. Depression doesn't always look like tears and pity parties. It can look like overwhelm, anger, unstable emotions, isolation, and anxiety too! Sound like anyone you know? Is it you girl?

Alice Walker said, "the most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any." Have you given up your power? Depression and anxiety can make us believe that we don't have any power and that things are hopeless. If you struggle with your daily life, relationships, self-esteem, and adjustment to changes, therapy can be a wonderful tool to help aid in your growth and find your power.
Black
and brown women have a lot coming at them and it can often make you feel powerless, let's work together to work through those things that may be holding you down.

My ideal clients are young men struggling with trauma issues who are seeking ways to resolve these issues before they become enduring problems for years to come. I also enjoy working with older men struggling with unresolved & unaddressed issues of complex trauma who have decided it's time to stop carrying some of those negative beliefs about themselves.

Please E-mail! Now Accepting New Clients! Oftentimes we are suffering from something traumatic and hadn't realized it. Because trauma within the
Black
& Brown communities has been normalized and or minimized. I’m sure phrases like “just get over it” and or “you’ll be alright” at one or many times in your life. This has been a well-known response we've heard from family members, at our jobs, or maybe even something that we've told ourselves. I believe that our family and friends mean well when they make the sentiments mentioned above. However they are missing important ways to help process, cope, and possibly heal,

You are most likely overwhelmed by which therapist to choose; your symptoms don’t seem to “match” anyone. However, you do know anxiety and/or depression has you feeling off-balance, or unresolved trauma is causing you to feel sad and isolated. Instead of seeing life in color, everything is “
black
and white”. Where you once were the life of the party, now sleep sounds so much better. You have a desperate need to “feel” again, because right now you just feel numb. I will provide a compassionate and supportive environment for you that is conducive to healing and self-discovery.

I understand that as human beings, we can lose sight of what is needed to feel good about ourselves. I believe that self-love, compassion, and forgiveness is imperative to a healthy lifestyle. You will find that I am committed to being present and drawing from you what you already know. I do not believe in individuals spending their lives in therapy, but I believe in the importance of discovering those things that will provide a better quality of life. We will discover what provides you freedom . We will explore what will improve your relationship with self and others.

Through talk therapy, dance, and various art forms I aim to be a witness to living in the light and coming out of a dark place. I provide humanistic, in-depth talk therapy to help clients who experience adversity, trauma, oppression, anxiety, depression, and other daily stressors. We discuss how to challenge experiences that hinder your growth, healing, and fulfillment of goals. In our discussions, we laugh, challenge, dream, cry, cuss, smile, and plan together.

People seek psychotherapy for different reasons. Sometimes they want to solve a specific problem produced by difficult circumstances; sometimes they want relief from feelings of general unhappiness and anxiety; other times they want to make a change, to feel less stuck, less depressed and more hopeful. Asking for help is the first important step. It gives substance to our desire for change and makes concrete our wish to feel better. This very act of asking says that we feel entitled to support and serious consideration.

After years of providing a broad range of services, in the context of a traditional private practice office which I closed at the end of 2017, I began doing therapy online. I decided to do this to maintain a limited level of professional activity, available to select clients for whom the online service delivery platform would be appropriate. Services are available to children, youth, adults, and families, at the rate of $75 per 45-minute session and payable via PayPal.

I know personally how the demands of life can be overwhelming - mentally, physically, and spiritually. Despite my own emotionally-devasting life experiences, I have overcome now using those experiences to connect with, engage, and counsel others to overcome. Through it all I have a passion for “helping hurting people heal.” I have experience with counseling couples, depression and anxiety, panic attacks and panic disorder, anger management, trauma and PTSD. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).

Black and African American Therapists
As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?
African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.
Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?
Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.
How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?
Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.
Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?
It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.
Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?
The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
