If you’re a human being on this planet, odds are you’ve been through things that have left a lasting negative impact on your mental health. You've also likely experienced feelings of shame when it comes to your sexuality that you never asked for. While you may have been told that you’re broken, that your sexuality is something to be ashamed of, or you’re just "bad" at relationships; my goal is to help you in working through these challenges. Whether you're experiencing mental health concerns, sexual related concerns, or you're just feeling "stuck" in life, we can work through it together.

I work with adults who are carrying the weight of past trauma. This may be a single overwhelming event such as medical trauma, birth trauma, or sexual trauma, or a series of experiences that left you feeling unsafe, unseen, or out of control. You may have symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or panic that show up in your body even when life seems calm on the outside. I use EMDR and NARM to help you process what happened so you can feel more grounded, steady, and in control of your life and relationships. I also offer 3 lengths of sessions (50, 80, and 140 minutes) so you can work at a pace that you prefer.

It can feel like your mind and body are betraying you when you suffer from the lasting effects of physical and sexual abuse.
You’ve survived things that should have broken you - but surviving isn’t the same as healing. You’ve built a life, held it together for everyone else, & yet something still feels unfinished… like part of you never made it out. You can’t explain it, but you can feel it — in your body, in your relationships, in the way you react. At The Trauma Therapy Company, we specialize in helping survivors stop reliving the past and finally feel safe in the present. Whether your pain comes from abuse, sexual trauma, emotional neglect, betrayal, or other experiences — we see how it lives in your body, and we know how to help you release it.

I see clients ages 16+ and am most passionate about working with young adults and those who have experienced sexual abuse, PTSD and other traumatic events.
My clients come to counseling to find hope. They are tired of struggling to get out of bed in the morning, missing out on meaningful relationships, living with crippling anxiety, and carrying their secrets alone. They want to talk through past trauma without their bodies taking off on them, laugh with their friends and family, sleep through the night, and experience freedom from the things holding them back. They want joy and peace and healing.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
