In addition to being trained as a generalist, I have specialized in working with trauma survivors throughout my years as a therapist, researcher, and advocate for survivors of sexual assault /abuse and relationship violence.
Most of us struggle at times. When the struggle lingers, or when significant or traumatic events impede us from functioning as well as we want to, therapy can help. Most of my clients are wrestling with a combination of anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or the impact of traumatic events. Some are struggling to identify what is most important or meaningful in life. Others are clear about their values and goals, but struggle with barriers of fear, avoidance, or doubt. In therapy, I aim to provide a sense of acceptance, understanding, and challenge to help you make the changes you want for yourself.

I have worked since the late 70s with survivors of trauma: physical abuse, neglect, sexual assault , and combat trauma.
I'm a social worker with over 45 years of experience with children, adolescents, families, couples and adults. I find that people get the best results when we look at their lives as a whole -physical, emotional, intellectual, what many people call spiritual (your most deeply held beliefs and values, however you define them), and socially, as a member of your community (as you define that.) I have training and experience in a variety of treatments which are evidence-based.

I provide EMDR therapy to help you get unstuck from the pain of sexual assault , toxic relationships, and childhood trauma.
You haven’t had it easy. The chaos you experienced from trauma and abuse is now over, but you can’t remember the last time you felt like yourself. You try to get over the past, but before you know it you're reminded of what happened all over again. Anxious and on edge, you do everything you can to help yourself feel okay, but nothing seems to last.

Finding a therapist you can trust is tough! The best way to get a feel for what working together might look like is to give me a call. We can explore what our work together might look like and you can get a feel for my style and therapeutic approach. My hope is always to collaborate with you, to better understand your experience and to empower you to make changes in ways that bring freedom and change. Therapy is never easy, but it can be one of the most important investments you can make in your life, and your future.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
