Some of the specific areas I have experience in is working with people who are first responders or veterans, and people who have experienced violent trauma such as domestic abuse or sexual assault.
Sometimes life’s challenges can leave us feeling lost, hurt, angry, or confused. We all have unique experiences that shape who we are and sometimes we need a little support navigating those experiences and feelings. My style is to partner with you to identify and work through the struggles while building on the strengths that make you uniquely you. I enjoy working with individuals of many different races, religions, genders, and cultures. Counseling sessions with me are collaborative and laid back. My approach to each session is as unique and individualized as each person I serve.

I have worked since the 1970s with survivors of trauma: physical abuse, neglect, sexual assault, and combat trauma.
I'm a clinical social worker with over 48 years of experience. I find that people get the best results when we look at their lives as a whole -physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual (your most deeply held beliefs and values), and socially, as a member of your community. I have training and experience in a variety of treatments which are evidence-based.

In addition to being trained as a generalist, I have specialized in working with trauma survivors throughout my years as a therapist, researcher, and advocate for survivors of sexual assault/abuse and relationship violence.
Most of us struggle at times. When the struggle lingers, or when significant or traumatic events impede us from functioning as well as we want to, therapy can help. Most of my clients are wrestling with a combination of anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or the impact of traumatic events. Some are struggling to identify what is most important or meaningful in life. Others are clear about their values and goals, but struggle with barriers of fear, avoidance, or doubt. In therapy, I aim to provide a sense of acceptance, understanding, and challenge to help you make the changes you want for yourself.

You know this sudden rush of emotions, when your heart is racing with memories of a time long gone but not forgotten? Maybe your palms are getting damp, and you feel your throat tightening - almost choking - as you remember painful memories of either childhood abuse, a painful breakup, or other shadows of the past – it's like being caught in a storm of past pain with a ton of emotions. Life is rough and now more than ever people are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and uncertain about how they should manage their relationships, careers, and lives — however, you don’t have to walk through this on your own! :)

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
