Many of the men, boys and individuals I work with are used to pushing through. handling stress or trauma quietly and showing up for others no matter what. Over time, that can start to take a toll. Anxiety, depression, or unresolved trauma can show up in ways that feel overwhelming, frustrating, or even unfamiliar. I specialize in helping people understand what they’re experiencing and develop practical tools to move forward with clarity and confidence. Whether you're dealing with constant stress, low mood, emotional numbness, or past experiences that still feel present, therapy can be a space where you don’t have to perform.

I am Steve Kapela, and I've been in long-term recovery since May 12, 2008. Gambling, alcohol, and drugs, etc. are all part of that story. My recovery has allowed me to heal my family, build a career, find redemption, and repair the damage from 35 years of addiction. I have even earned a full pardon from the governor of Ohio for my past. At the age of 50, I began working in the recovery field while pursuing my education. In 2016, I earned my Master of Social Work (LISW-S), and by 2017, I received my independent social worker license and Chemical Dependency certification. I was also among the first in Ohio to be certified as a gamblin

Accepting new clients! I help people overcome difficulty and use it to grow and pursue a life of meaning and purpose. Sometimes we start by treating stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, career, or LGBTQ+ and other identity issues, and over time turn to deeper issues about the life you want to create, your identity, and your values. I’m a humanistic counselor, which means I’ll never tell you what to do and I’ll always empower you to make the choice that’s best for you. I use a collaborative, gentle approach that helps you connect with your intuitive sense of self and your intrinsic motivation to grow and do difficult things.

There is a curious habit that I've noticed, especially when working with teens, that clients will mostly only work on the "issue of the week." This can have numerous benefits and can also delay the client's progress on any underlying concerns or patterns. Ideally, once a client has agreed to their treatment goals, they continue to take attainable steps towards that goal in therapy and in their daily life. When a client feels comfortable with their therapist to share their thoughts, emotions, and vulnerabilities, then deeper work can happen.

I support clients in exploring how they use their energy in relationship with self, others, work, and life, and in reflecting honestly on what is or isn’t serving them.
I bring deep presence, a noticing ear, and a gentle voice of reflection. I walk alongside clients with humility, courage, and confidence in their process. The journey often calls us to leave home, to venture out and gather experience - the beauties and joys, the tragedies and traumas - which then becomes the wisdom we bring back to support self and others.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
